Windows 9

It's horses for courses; the command line can be just as slow or useless in some instances as it is fast in others - even for the same basic task e.g. file management.

> Also, make a different version for desktop. the laptop/tablet version would be suited to touch screens, with a similar theme to the current Win8, whereas the desktop version would have a more "mouse-friendly" UI, so no stupid lock screen where you have to drag stuff up and down and wherever just to get into your PC, and scrolling that goes horizontal when you can only scroll vertically on a conventional mouse. I cannot see gamers with 28" touch-screen monitors trying to use the current Win8; you'd get arm ache because of endless reaching... fine for a tablet, but not for desktop PC.

> at the moment, you can't search for programs in the search bar (in what's supposed to be the start menu, but is in fact a load of tiles, similar to my bathroom), so i would like that back. it's much easier, still being on Win7 to just search for a program (or files) through the start bar.

> It's too hotmail/messenger/skype-based. things are linked to hotmail contacts, which you may not want. i mean, at least with Win7, you could choose to ignore that stupid contacts folder, that nobody ever uses. So i think they should detach it slightly from communication, after all, computers aren't just used to talk to people and surf the net.

You don't have to drag anything up on the lock screen, you can search for programs on the Start screen (it's the default criteria for crying out loud) and if you don't want any online integration you can create a standard user account like you've been able to do for decades.

Wrong.

If you ever come accustomed to bash then you'll realise how amazing it is.

To open Firefox all I have to do is Ctrl + Alt + T and then type firefox and slam enter.

To move a file Ctrl + Alt+ T and mv (or mvdir for directory) /usr/keiron/desktop/something.jpg /user/keiron/pictures

It's pretty useful to 'master', but you don't really have to master it at all.

im not wrong. your basically saying everybody can use a keyboard. I can't, i'm disabled, I can only use a mouse with my chin, so
without GUI's it would take me much longer to do things or maybe unable to use a pc

I'm using Windows 8 with Start8 and it's perfect, all the goodness of 7 and 8 combined. Is only $5 and there are plenty of codes to get a few % off (I think if you take the trial and don't sign up you get emailed a code for 10% off) but at about 3 quid who can really complain? Can't even get a decent pint in most places in the city for that!

Re. the issue with Blu Ray and DVD playback support, if this reduces the overall cost for everyone and the people who need it can purchase it with a third party what's the problem? I registered for the free Media Center pack before the cut-off so got it for nowt but free alternatives like VLC are available too. I don't intend to play Blu Ray on my PC so if the upgrade cost had been £10 or £15 more to cover licensing I wouldn't have been pleased.

My whole place has actually swapped over to Win8 except some accounting machines.

I know its a huge mammoth task that computer literate people may have trouble with, I mean...all THAT effort having to "click" to desktop, I can tell you, took me two months of training to figure that out.

With the sarcasm out of the way, im bloody glad that awful looking 90's design of "Aero" is gone, it was god damn hideous looking, as well as the relic Start Menu that was completely impractical, that and having Charm bar working so well half greatly reduced my efforts searching about for files etc.

It's another thing entirely when Microsoft are removing these features though, that's what bothers me about it. Before Windows 8 I was actually hoping we might see some kind of Blu-ray support included, but instead we've taken a massive stride backwards in that regard.

The reason that Windows doesn't play certain things "out of the box" are twofold.
Firstly there are license costs involved. Bluray codecs and the like cost money.
Secondly there are the anti-trust rulings. If MS included such players then "other players are available" would get all upset again.
Just include codecs and rival codecs will moan.
It's simply safer to include nothing and let customers get on with it.

I said this from the very minute the anti-trust started. How in the future MS would be forced to cripple their own products to keep people happy. The various governments simply not seeing the big picture as they went after MS.
Lose DVD and Bluray support. Next it will be no browser. All of it hurts us users!!

Yes you can. It searches your indexed files just like Windows 7 did.

Delete the email apps if you dont use them and use the desktop like normal.

> it treats you like an idiot. when you get a BSOD, you get a massive picture of a sad face, and something that says: "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart". WHAT PROBLEM?? WHERE'S THAT MEMORY CRASH DUMP METER THAT USED TO BE THERE? WHY IS THAT SAD FACE STARING AT ME, AND WHY IS THIS TREATING ME LIKE AN IDIOT? (you get the idea, i hope). please can we have the old BSOD screen back in Win9??

Stop being daft :)

I do beleive that most people who are whinging about it really havn't given it chance.

People wanting a "file explorer"...... errr what happened to clicking on my computer then onto c:/?

I really dont get peoples problem with Windows 8. It improves on Windows 7 in almost every way apart from its a bit weird at first!

Why's everybody so far behind? I've got Windows 95..

:p
As for Windows 9, I'd like to see further optimizations to performance. But most importantly - Less of Windows 8.
I'd happily use W7 for as long as I can. So I'd love W9 to be similar.
I'd also like to see changes to how users interact. I don't want to be treated like I'm completely computer illiterate. As someone said above - I don't want a sad face on a BSOD, I'd rather be told what the problem is.

Gareth, I was about to pipe up and mention this :)

Do you find the W8 start menu far better? I imagine once it's setup, it's a dream to use compared to W7

yeah I guess some people don't think. :)

win8 start menu (metro) is much better for me. the titles makes it easier to click on the right program/game that I want without any miss hits. even the all apps list view is still big enough to click on the right program/game that I want without any miss hits.

win7 start menu was to small meaning it was easy to miss hit what you want.

Windows XP for Business = YES YES YES YES
Windows V for Business = NO NO NO NO
Windows 7 for Business = YES YES YES YES

Windows 2000 was built on the NT kernel, Windows ME was built on the same DOS foundations as Windows 98. They were fundamentally different; Windows 2000 was a stable, reliable OS, whereas Windows ME's reputation for being terrible was fully deserved.

My main wish for the next version of Windows is an improvement in DPI scaling, so that we can finally leave behind the nightmare of the 1366 x 768 resolution used on almost every laptop. I want a Windows laptop with a screen equivalent to the Macbook Pro or the Chromebook Pixel!

You may get your wish with regards to high resolution screens. If they're putting efforts into supporting smaller screen sizes then you would hope that they are looking into the scaling issue as a whole.

Microsoft desperately need something to compete with the lower end of the tablet market and you're not going to do that with a 10" tablet. It needs to be in the 7" range.

I don't agree that 1366x768 is a total nightmare as it works absolutely fine on your average computer, but it's way more common than it should be on some of the more expensive machines.
