I've got my hands on a 600GB VelociRaptor drive for free. Would it be of any benefit as a storage drive compared with any modern 1TB drive, while using a SSD as OS/boot drive? If so i'll keep it.

Since you've got it for free, and assuming you already have the SSD, then can't see why you wouldn't use it.
In theory the 1TB would probably have slightly higher sequential transfer speeds, but the velociraptor will have noticeably faster access times.
If you have a large Steam folder and a small SSD e.g. 120Gb, then the velociraptor could be ideal for it.
Another idea would be to use it as a fast scratch drive, e.g. for unarchiving stuff, temp folders, pagefile etc. Stuff that changes a lot and that you wouldn't normally put on your SSD. And then get a 1TB for actual storage.
