Anyone able to recommend a bike for £600-800 for long distance cycling and Ironman training?

Thinking of either the Giant Defy 3/4 (not sure if 4 is worth the extra) or something else if something is much better.

Would look at Ribble but need to get the bike on finance to be honest to be able to spend this much and fund other hobbies.

I haven't weighed myself recently but last summer I was 68kg at 5'11". I look like I've dropped weight since though and I'm aiming for 65kg before summer. Currently doing the 5:2 diet and it seems to be working so far. Almost have proper abs for the first time in my life!

I'm 6'4" and about 80kg. I'd hope to stay around the same over the summer but realistically I might go up a little if I build my legs up. Hopefully in the process I'd lose a few kg fat.

Yes, 80KG is my dream weight. Not sure if I'll ever get there though. I'm very broad and have a lot of upper body muscle from weight training when I was in the Army. Oh, and I like to eat cake :D

*Jumps on any diet bandwagon*

What's the 5:2 diet and how does it work? Give a sample daily eating plan please ;)

Actually meant to say the Defy 2/3 not the 4. :)

While were at it I'm 5'11 and 85KG.

You're all making me feel super fat. There's 6'+ behemoths that weigh significantly less than me. :(

Still, it's going down and not all my weight is chub. If I can get down to around 75-80kg like I plan to I'll be laughing my way up and down hills all day long while screaming "haters gonna hate" to everyone I pass :D

5:2 is dumb

its based on the idea of eating whatever (reasonably healthy/average diet) for 5 days and then basically not eating for 2 days a week (a piece of fruit or something at every mealtime)

5 Days of eating what you normally eat (without going too crazy) and 2 days of starvation dieting, eating no more than 600 kcal.

My missus and I are on it - I'm doing it more as a support rather than required. It's also good for exercising your insulin and sugar, supposed to help.

600kcal every Tues and Thurs me us, never at a weekend, because it's horrible, plus, work takes my mind off the hunger. Breakfast was 2 poached eggs and a unbuttered toast. Dinner will be a baked salmon with (lots) brocolli and a light splash of seasame oil.

The intermit starvation is to bring the body back to how it was built for, not constantly getting an average high calorie. The diabetic exercise of insulin alone is worth it.

I didn't think it was that simple... but in any case, not eating at all certainly sounds dumb to me! See below :D

I was thinking the same :( don't even know how I ended up being such a fatty either haha. Must've happened overnight!

This post explains it well.

I like it because counting calories every day of the week would drive anyone nuts and the two fast days generally aren't that bad for me to get through. It also means I can do my training on normal diet days so my energy levels are good, though I find on fast days I have decent energy levels throughout the day anyway (no 2pm crash after lunch which I seem to get regardless of what I eat).

Edit: the people that paint it as eat **** for 5 days and starve yourself for 2 and lose weight are wide of the mark. We still eat well on normal days and fast meals consist of proper food, just focusing on low calories (i.e. white fish, green veg, turkey and similar foods).

That 5:2 thing might be effective but it's nowhere near as fun as the 'eat kebabs and dominos all day erry day and eat cake but cycle ridiculous miles' diet.

It's easier to type though I'll give you that.

Do you find lots of gels gives you a bad stomach? I'm okay with 1 or 2 but any more and I get stomach cramps. Likewise sports energy drinks - I'd have a 2 to 3l in my Camelback for an MTB ride and feel ropey by the end of it.

I get on fine with a bladder full of High5 Zero / Zym / Nuun electrolyte drink and then a bottle with some Lucozade Sport in. Means needing bulkier stuff for carbs.

becareful with Gels, if you keep taking them they give you the runs but they do work though

i dont take them becuase that is one thing i cant stand the taste of

and talking about our body weights, wel, my metabolism, is extremly high, before cycling i used to eat tons of cake , mars bars etc and i always stayed the same, now im doing loads of cycling, i dont think ive changed much, but i'll have to re weigh myself

i used to be 6'2 weighing in at 10s8

I think Soreen is going to become my staple energy food for cycling and rock climbing although I have just got 2 boxes of gels from Wiggle as they are on BOGOF.

Soreen is tasty even when plain, high energy, low fat and can be squashed.
