That 5:2 thing might be effective but it's nowhere near as fun as the 'eat kebabs and dominos all day erry day and eat cake but cycle ridiculous miles' diet.

It's easier to type though I'll give you that.

I used to do that when I worked shifts (6 months)
Cycled "only" 12 miles return from work on a MTB; pasta for brunch, pizza for tea and a supper of usually, 8 chicken wings, a big portion of fries and a can of coke every monday to friday.

Did not put on an ounce.

BTW, I'm 175cm, 67kg.

I think Soreen is going to become my staple energy food for cycling and rock climbing although I have just got 2 boxes of gels from Wiggle as they are on BOGOF.

Soreen is tasty even when plain, high energy, low fat and can be squashed.

Soreen and flapjack are my food of choice on rides. Not that keen on gels but the SiS ones are about the most palatable.

I'm 175cm and 66kg. I can climb not bad but lack power on the flat. I'm working on it though! ;)

I find i need to eat a lot when i cycle though - high metabolism or whatever. I don't get on with gels v well so tend to take actual food with me. Lots of Soreen and Flapjacks tend to work for me. Bananas as well. I absolutely have to eat something every 45mins after the first hour, otherwise it can get pretty horrible.

Drinks wise, if i was going 50 miles, i'd take 2 bottles, one with a zero tablet as i find they help stop me cramping, and the other with just plain water. Unless it's warm though i probably wouldn't drink all of that.

I seem to drink a lot when I'm riding. Anything from around 30 miles or more and I'll drink two 750ml bottles. Generally I stick a zero tablet in the first bottle and decide during the ride if I want one in the second. As for nutrition a banana in the back pocket, some nuts and maybe some flapjack. I'll generally stick in a few gels but only twice felt the need to use them.

5'10" and 78Kg at the moment. I think I carry a reasonable amount of muscle though and am certainly not chubby. I want to lose some more weight though. I've been down to 75kg this year already but that was really pushing a calorie deficit too hard I think. Couple of eating anything at the weekend and watching what I eat less and I'm back up a few kilos :(

5'9" and ~91kg. I've lost about 12lb in 4 weeks through calorie deficit and hope to lose another stone by Summer ready for my first sportive in June. The weight I've lost so far has upped my average speed by quite a lot.

Got any tips for trying to break your first century? That's my aim this year. Done a few metric centuries.

Just go for it, plan a big route and start out steady with a decent cadence. If you can already ride a metric century you'll be fine to do a full one. I went from my biggest ride being 40 miles, to doing over 150. As long as you pace yourself, and keep really on top of your fueling, you'll be fine.

Yeah, food, don't get cocky early on and miss food breaks/slow downs, you'll regret it come 70 miles, believe me!

Also, 2 rides out this year and I'm watching this thread like a hawk lol.

The main rule of doing a century is that when you get home, you can (and definitely should) eat whatever the hell you like. I had cookies, chocolate, ice cream and a massive roast dinner.

It was nice :D

To make all you tall averagely weighted people feel better I'm 6'3" and 115kg. Thighs the size of tree trunks with a belly the size of Budda (but its getting smaller!).

I'm 5ft 9in and 10st 3/4 or thereabouts (hover between 10 & half and 11 stone).
I was 12 1/4 stone last October and through mainly cycling and a bit of running and doing a fasting diet for about a month (18/6 daily, thats 18 hours fasting, 6 hour eating window) i knocked down the weight by Xmas.

On the subject of Soreen, i seem to go through at least 1 packet a week!
Low in fat/sat fat and tasty so a day doesnt go by without having a couple of slices.

Thanks guys, that helps.

When you talk about fuelling for a century ride, what would you guys normally need for a 100 mile ride? I ask because when I've done 60+ miles I've run out of food/gels (2 cereal bars and 2 or 3 gels) and water (2 bottles with high 5 tabs) around 50+ miles and I start to cramp up. I sweat like a mofo though so clearly I need more water :D

I'd be looking to nibble something every 20 to 30 mins, aiming to take on at least 300 calories an hour.
