Driving long distance

Does anyone else have problems with the angle of the pedals? I don't know if it's the car, or the fact I might have long legs compared to my body, but my right heel hurts after half an hour, it feels like there is pressure on the wrong part of the foot, and the pedal should be a few more inches further away. I can't move the seat back, otherwise I can't use the clutch :(

No, it doesnt, if you are bound by domestic driving rules, you cant do 690 miles in a shift.

Don't argue with something you know nothing about.

The rules state no more than 10 hours driving in an 11 hour shift, doing less than 10 is within the rules  (He even linked the rules, and you quoted his post).

I have done the Surrey -> Halifax (230miles ish) journey a number of times and never seem to have had an issue with locking up or feeling tired etc. I agree that the type of car helps but after driving a good few types backwards and forwards (406 diesel, polo, 206, Ka, 200SX and an Avensis) all I need is a bit of light music.

I have to lol at a lot of these "long distance" drives, with breaks every 3 meters or so.

The last drive I did, was Aberdeen to Timisoara, IN ONE GO. Only stopping to fuel up. No sleep, no rests. Straight.

28hrs, 1800miles.

Check it on google maps. Didn't even sleep on the Eurotunnel.

oh hai, welcome new user

I couldn't do it as a "HGV" driver as I don't have the correct license:D

You waded in saying " You couldn't do it as a professional (HGV ) driver".
I never claimed I could.

Your arguing apples and oranges

Yes your correct no transport manager would risk that run for HGV's or PSV's however we run small vans and cars and that was the biggest run. Which I did as I knew it was tight.

You've also miss quoted me
I said it comes under the "GB Domestic driving rules"

lol

I used to do Corby to Peterhead (bachelors) in nine hours driving.

First break (4½ hours) at Johnstonbridge services and then ease off a tad for the rest of the way as the Rozzers on the A74 really don't like Sassenach truckies doing 75mph across their patch !!

Truck was a J reg 325 ERF pulling a 15"9 tautliner (carrying empty plastic bottles) with a donked limiter.

lol The Scania 420 lads really really didn't like a 325 blowing them away !! (ERF's were bloody fast on top end)

Bit silly really as I couldn't go anywhere afterwards. just parked up in Peterhead harbour car-park with a wonderful view of the prison !

Don't buy any kebabs from Peterhead..Ugh.

What a man

Well, didn't have as much bother as I thought I would.

Managed 610 miles today, left at 7:15 this morning, arrived back about half an hour ago. Accomplished a great deal as well :D. I drove all the way back, 4 1/2 hours and never even felt the need to stop.

Those chevron things are annoying.
"Keep 2 chevrons apart" I had to do 110mph at one point to catch up to the car in front, otherwise it would have been more than 2 chevrons. I wonder why they make you do that?? Seems odd.

I am quite achy now! And my car smells of farts :D.

I do 500+ miles a week through work.

Have snacks in the boot. Makes you stop and fetch them.

Also a fave of mine:-

McDonalds coffee stops every 2 hours. Just remember to park and fetch not drive through! :D

Quite often do London to Tarragona (1 hr south of Barcelona) in the summers - about 32 hrs (although do cheat and let the ferry do a bit). Usually stop in Zaragoza for lunch.

What do people do when getting puncture's in newer cars without spare wheels on the continent?

Same as they do here i'd guess.

Add the filler, watch it pour out the hole, call the 4th emergency service which they prearranged cover for..

I quite enjoy long drives. I've done 980 miles in a day before (Basingstoke to a couple of sites in Falkirk then down to Southampton and back to Basingstoke) and admittedly, I was pretty ruined afterwards. Never had a problem staying awake though, something in my mind just stops me from getting to the point I have to doze. Did find I needed a coffee break after I'd done from Basingstoke to Gretna though, about 320 miles.

On the other hand a friend of mine can't handle driving more than 2 hours at a time because he seems to need the toilet regularly. People just handle things differently :)

Corby to Peterhead in 9hours!!! - I was about to cry BS until I read about the donked limiter, I presume this was pre M74 too? - Today, speed limited, you wouldn't manage that run from Stoke with a 10hr drive - never mind Corby!! :D

Fwiw, with an equally donked limiter, I used to do Altens, Aberdeen to Stoke in 9hours with a K reg Scania 220 3Series, ahh, the days of dodgy operators & tachograph kill switches...... ;)

Only issue I have with long trips is the need to pee...

Something about the vibrations from the road just gets my bladder working overtime!
