UEFA Champions League/Europa League 5/6/7 March *** Spoilers ***

Okay there's always the chance someone will rifle in a screamer from god knows where, but not the edge of your 18 yard box. Not twice. Take it to penalties.

Modric did score from outside the area..

Madrid coming off the back of two victories v Barcelona had far too much ammunition v 10 men.

The red card changed the game but it was Sir Alex's inability to react to the situation that cost United the game, Mourinho's ability to change the game from a Real point of view won them the game.

The players and staff were clearly hung up on the red card, which is something you can not afford to be.

Mourinho is right 'that's football', you have to change and be reactive to the situation, nobody from United did that.

I also think not starting Rooney sent out the wrong message, I thought Welbeck did quite well running about a bit, but his lack of ability showed when he actually got the ball and had to do something with it.

The tactics were nigh on perfect up to that point. While we had sat back a little bit after the goal - that doesn't mean it would have stayed that way. It was probably just to ensure they didn't get a quick reply (as often happens).

The red messed everything up and we didn't have answer to it. The manager and coaching staff should have done something (bar stand on the touchline shouting and screaming). Surely in a game such as this you should always have a plan if a player is - rightly or wrongly - sent off. It's not as if red cards are rare these days.

An attempt to park the bus would have been nice, it can work: see Chelsea v Barcelona second leg last year. Okay there's always the chance someone will rifle in a screamer from god knows where, but not the edge of your 18 yard box. Not twice. Take it to penalties.

I was expecting this. Should have been 2 I stand changes then defending for your life. Heck you could have Eooney on as a CM keeping RVP on then defending heavily with the option to counter attack fast and effective with RVP/Rooney and catch them on the break.

The thing that surprised me was how good Modric was when he came on, he was the only RM player who could actually put their foot on the ball and slow things down and scored an unbelievable effort. Kaka, what a disappointment he is now. Khedira, Alonso and Di Maria were all poor.

I disagree about Alonso, I thought he was subdued well last night, but as soon as United stopped marking him he started playing much more positive passes, rather than the negative passes (to the defenders) he was being forced in to. Khedira was poor, but that's because he's not that good, Fergie was clearly worried about Alonso and no Khedira and that was shown in the way they were marked. Khedira was left (largely) alone.

Di Maria was 'ite, he went off before having that much of an impact.

Modric was only good because of the situation, imho, he came on and played where Khadria had been playing, and Modric is a far better offensive player, he's much better at doing things in the final third and beating players than Khadira. He's had a very poor season but has been used ~quite well as a sub, he comes on and offers something a bit different to Khadira / Alonso and operates much more forward between the lines almost. Defenders nightmare late on when you're down to ten men.

United needed to keep Alonso out of the game, so I was expecting United to (very quickly) take either Van Persie off or Welbeck off and bring on Rooney. You then sit Rooney on the left hand side and put Van Persie or leave Welbeck on Alonso.

Rvp looked tired. He should have been rested at weekend.

Rooney should have started. Firvall welbevks good running he finishes awfully and did so every chance he got. The open net where he kicked it back to their keeper epitomised this.

Even if Ferguson did change personnel after the sending off, who would he bring on? The situation was tailor made for Phil Jones or Darren Fletcher. Hell even if they had Park he could have come on.

It’s a shame for the spectacle really, even though all the literalists on here think it was a 100% red card.

I agree Alonso was the man they needed to keep quiet. They did really well in the first half, only heard his name twice.

The game changer was obvoiusly the red card. In my eyes it wasn't a red 'as he hard his eyes on the ball, with intent to control it, unbeknowing that arbeloa had moved into his path'. I can see why the ref gave a red though, as everything in Turkish football is intentional. *jokes*..

Anyway, I thought modric changed the game. After the sending off man U still kept tight on Alonso but modric has the same abilities which ultimately opened up united.

Higiuan was also very good as was Ronaldo himself.

I wouldn't go as far to say that if bank was still on they would have won the game but they'd atleast had a fighting chance...

Another note in nani's defence: listening to radio 1 this morning. Nick grimshaw was shocked by the sending off. If someone who knows nothing about football thought it wasn't a red card it speaks volumes...:)

Thought the red was a little harsh but you can't blame the ref for sending him off. Accidental or not Nani kicked the bloke in the chest with his studs up. Real didn't look that great and ManU still had plenty of chances to get back into the game even with 10 men.

As a top striker you need to carry both luck and talent on your back.

Even the goal that real scored for us, welbeck only scuffed that and to be fair he should have probably done a bit better. How many times did welbeck force a good save? Not many compared to how many times he was in a shooting position.

There's a reason he has only 2 goals this season.

I can't believe all the criticism Welbeck gets, you'd think he's gone and slept with all the Man Utd fans kids.

He's not as good as Rooney, no, and his finishing isn't the best, but he really isn't a bad player. The fact he's involved with so much shows that, if he was as poor as people try and make out, the game would simply pass him by.

It's just people looking to have a scapegoat ready for when something goes wrong.

I didn't understand his selection and Rooney's omission. I think Welbeck did a good job defensively against Madrid but I didn't think he did very well offensively, other than running a bit quicker than the Real defenders. I didn't see him do anything that Rooney couldn't have done and Rooney offers more attacking options imho, he's a more dynamic player.

I guess when you play real Madrid you need your best players onboard and I know welbeck scored a dexebt goal in the first leg but still..

Any gifs of fergies reaction?! :D
I believe this was after the final whistle.
