Hi all,

Just built my new PC earlier this afternoon - Went for a SSD build as I was a little behind the times.

i5-3570k @ 3.4Ghz
Gigabyte Z77M-D3H MicroATX Mobo
Silverstone 600w Modular PSU
Silverstone NT06-E CPU Cooler
8Gb RAM
Samsung 840 128Gb SSD

Been messing with the Samsung software that came with the drive. Ran a test to see what the performance was like ;

414/530 Read Speed (MB/s) - Not far off
138/130 Write Speed (MB/s) - Excellent

7642/86000 Random Read (IOPS) - Rather low?
23897/32000 Random Write (IOPS) - Not that bad?

What would be causing the slow random read/write speeds?

Thanks all :)

Have you installed the Intel rapid storage drivers off gigabytes website? They should improve speeds slightly

Flash to the latest motherboard BIOS aswell

Odd - Downloaded the correct Rapid Storage drivers for my OS and I get an error message about my computer not meeting the correct requirements?

I don't know why that is,

check your in ahci mode in the bios for the sata ports
and running the latest motherboard bios then see if they will install for you

the speeds look ok to me but those drivers would improve them slightly,on the iops it does say upto so can be anything below whats quoted

At the moment my BIOS says IDE mode and Intel Rapid is DISABLED and it's greyed out. I changed it to AHCI mode and enabled Intel Rapid and I got BSOD's and Windows wouldn't boot!

Weird stuff!

ahh its an easy fix,

download and run this reg file, reboot into bios and set to ahci mode,save/exit and boot up into windows and it should install the ahci drivers, then you might be able to install the intel storage drivers

http://cdn.ithinkdiff.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/ahci.reg download and run this

ahci mode will improve ssd speeds no end,ide is slower

EDIT: don't enable intel rapid start, thats for ssd caching and you don't need that, just set ahci

Mate you're a star, thanks very much. Installed the reg file (What was that by the way) changed the BIOS to ACHI and it booted fine. Windows installed my drives again but still couldn't install the drivers but to be fair, the results were amazingly better!

535/530 Read
138/138 Write

63201/86000 Read
32942/32000 Write

Still odd why I can't install the software though.

Thanks again mate :D

it just a reg tweak that lets you set ahci without re installing windows, its harmless and wont hurt anything,it just puts a 0 instead of a 1 in the ahci reg file to allow installation of the ahci drivers,

I wouldn't worry about the intel storage drivers,i don't know why they wont install for you ive never had that issue but it only slightly improves things

I'm going to update the BIOS I think, http://uk.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4329&dl=1#bios just to see if that helps.

Been a while since I've updated a BIOS.

F14d 3.55 MB 2012/11/21 Asia China America Europe Europe(Russia) : FTP / Http

Beta BIOS
Support Secure boot option

Seems to be the latest

I would use a usb memory stick, put the bios file/files onto it and boot into the bios, press f8 and enter qflash and update the bios, remember to check your in ahci mode as flashing the bios will reset bios to default and might set to ide again

Thanks again mate. Flashed BIOS to F14d - installed the Intel Rapid Drivers from Gigabyte's website and the read IOPS are in the 80k figures now! Lost slight random read IOPS but nothing too concerning.

Really appreciate help mate!
