***The Official Sony Xperia Z Thread ***

Have you used Stamina? With stamina mode on, I've left the phone on idle for 10 hours only to come back and notice it drop by 1-2%, which I think is unbelievable lol. Even shorter idle times make a difference. Although I do accept that constant use does drain it more than I like sometimes.

I have to say I don't use stamina mode as I like to have data coming in as and when it arrives. I could certainly make things stretch further by doing that, but I would still have expected more from the battery. It isn't unworkable - it will do a day of moderate use just but no more than that. If I get the train in the morning and am doing web browsing / downloading it will be down below 50% by 10am

I use mine pretty heavily during a working day and I can only just get an 8-hour shift out of it with a ~20 minute charge during the day. Not brilliant, but I can live with it.

As for ROMs, it's worth noting that most UK carriers have locked the bootloader down, and there is currently no way to unlock it (in the service menu, Unlockable Bootloader: No).

i've played with one today at a store and i didnt find the screen SO bad, in fact i think its one of the best i have seen. Ok it hasnt got the awesome viewing angles but it wasnt the mess i have seen in the web, maybe it was due to a sunny day here, the looks of it though are awesome, gorgeous device but huge for my taste.

thats what i've said! the screen is not bad :) tbh you need to play with one before buying the size in my case is BANG ON feels so good in hand..

Well I must have gotten one with a real **** screen. A home on the table as I would use a phone often times, it look like I was looking at the screen through cataracts.

what was your previous phone? if you come from an amoled one i can understand your dissapointment on the viewing angles...

Mine arrived today as expected, it is from mobilephonesdirect so not from a carrier - I have used them a few times before for great results to not be filled with carrier crap or locked down.

How do I check if it is bootloader locked?

Coming from a Galaxy S3 (purchased on Launch day) my initial impressions are going to be no surprise. The screen while crisp in detail lack the vibrancy of the colours the S3 has ... but the colours seem more realistic. The S3 AMOLED always seems larger than life, like green is GREEN and blue is BLUE.

The viewing angles are of course better on the S3 and the blacks darker but I think the Xperia Z is going to be far superior in bright sunlight. I went from an Xperia S to the S3 and the Xperia S was the best phone I had ever used while outside and I struggle everytime it is a bright day to see my screen on the S3.

There is zero interface lag, I have not yet installed anything (not even plugged the sim card in yet) as I was going to give it a testing before deciding to keep it or send back under DSR.

One thing I noticed when I first had the S3 and had forgotten all about is the typical Greeny/Blue tint to all the colours especially whites. Really obvious side by side with the Xperia Z which is giving a perfect white.

There's a way to bypass this but it costs money, using SETool2. Was about to go through this route with my Xperia PLAY (bootloader says no for me as well...) but then managed to get an older version of x-Parts to install CWM (new version doesn't work with my phone) even with a locked bootloader. Don't think it's compatible with the Z but I'm sure a dev will get something similiar working. Bare in mind you're still stuck with the stock kernal via this method...

Dial *#*#7378423#*#* on the dialler to bring up the service menu. Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. Look for 'Bootloader unlock allowed' at the bottom, if it says 'yes' the bootloader can be unlocked, if it says 'no' then it is locked down.

Just bought mine sim free from Phones4u (surprised I didn't get hassled!) and mine is unlocked :D

I've read a few reviews n adverts claiming not just waterproof but shatterproof screen, is this correct and if so how shatterproof, if it's decently shatterproof and waterproof that is a mega special feature that could put the XZ firmly back in the running, IMHO, parents of boys, runners, bikers, blue collar workers folk who live in rainy countries the list goes on.

The glass has a 'shatterproof' film, but I don't think it makes the screen any more resilient to breaking than anything else with gorilla/dragontrail glass, it just means the glass will crack rather than shatter.

Yup when I was looking in o2 I thought it was comfortably in my N4's ball park, I even. Thought it looked ok at extreme angle let's face it it's full HD with high PPI, IMO Sony's issues with this are gona be ergonomics and locked down sw and rooting difficulties and the subsequent loss of Bravia.

Ta Drexel, iirc it was a major retailer claiming shatterproof on their purchase page, I think it could have been mobile direct when I was looking at the AMAZING £26 pm unltd data offer.

Sony's secret weapon could be aggressive pricing, we can but hope may be the Google Nexus 4 will have price ramifications.

Useful thread for XZ owners or potential buyers

Long list of questions with links to the answers.

I won't be buying but £24 pm after cash back is crazy low for unlimited data, that's like buying the phone on easy interest free credit and getting an unlimited data decent min n texts contract for free.

It's like Sony and the carriers know this is actually one of the best phones from last year rather than this year.
