Electric Blankets

I love mine! It's a Slumberland something or other I think. FAR cheaper than heating the whole house when I'm hear by myself although it's not been on for a few weeks other than last night.

I'm not afraid to admit I'd be lost without my electric blanket... I'd rate them as the greatest invention of all time...

PSA for those with Electric Blankets - never, ever, ever, use them on babies or young kids who are prone to wetting themselves. There was a programme on the telly the other week about this poor girl who, as a baby, was placed on top of an electric blanket and she peed herself (as babies do!) and it caused horrific electrical burns and scars for life when it seeped through into the electric wiring.

Just a heads-up for anyone with young kids/babies who like to use these blankets!

Carry on.

Don't buy cheap knockoffs? Any product worth it's cost will have fail safes for exactly this sort of misuse. Buy cheap expect cheap.

Find a Mrs5UB. Or a Mr5UB, whatever makes you happiest. Or both at the same time, just so long as you have earplugs and air tickets to a different continent. :p

I'm with 5UB on this one, they are amazing.

My GF had one when she was at Uni as you know what students are like with not wanting the heating on . Whacking it on to 2 for a couple of hours making a toasty bed and then dropping it to 1 for a warm nights sleep was brilliant!

You need to either man up or find yourself a lady (or man if thats your thing) to warm your bed for you! I would have though that, as somoene who enjoys forum god and all round good guy status, you would have women/men calmbering over themselves to get into your bed and thus warm it for you.

Edit: Wait a damn minute!!! Do my eyes decieve me or is this a sensible and legible post from Tony Williams?!

I should imagine he is currently being uber careful about electrical appliances being left on at night considering he burnt his own house down last month.!!! :D

The rest of you need to grow some balls..
It's 16.6°c in here tonight, the bedroom is colder... I haven't had an electric blanket since I was a nipper!

I love my leccy blanky.... all snuggly bugly in the bed.

..... Ahem

I've got a cheap one from Argos which is still nice but doesn't cover enough of the bed for my liking, always have cold feet.

Wouldn't be without one now, great for warming the bed before I get in and a damn sight cheaper than having the heating on.

Edit: Don't sleep with it on though, once the bed has warmed up from its iced state it tends to stay pretty cosy.

Sorry to tread on your thread 5UB.

Can someone suggest one for my nan. I want good even heat as I think she should spend her time in comfort and she's always cold in bed!

It really depends how much you want to spend. There are some awesome ones with soft wool covers so you don't get the wires poking you and with special foot-warming bits. The cheap ones have big lumps where the ac converter sits, are too small, and not washable.

Love ours, it's like getting into a warm hug every night :)

We tend to buy the cheaper dual control type (still have a three years guarantee) and use a mattress topper to cover it, thus you don't feel the wires that much. The side plugs for the remote are positioned fine. We place a cheaper mechanical timer on the plug socket and so they are switched on for an hour before we go to bed. Also they can be washed and even have a three years warranty. The only difference that we have noticed about a more expensive one is that sometimes they have a cosy hotter foot section.

Over the many many years we have used them we have never had a blanket failure but have had the remote controls go faulty - usually the ones with timers etc. When under warranty Slumberland have been pretty good with replacements etc.

Quite a few years ago a law or something was passed which limited the heat of these blankets because I do remember previous to that some of them got seriously toasty on the hotter settings.
