tool for brake caliper

Hi

I'm going to attempt to change my own pads on my van. Every time i've had them changed they used a tool to put the piston looking things back into the caliper (or what ever there called) the front ones can just be pushed in but the back they use a tool the screws them in anti clockwise. Does anyone know the name of the tool and where I can get one from? I'm guessing it's a specialised tool so I can't just get it from anywhere?

To break it quickly and efficiently I recommend a nut cracker....

Or try a caliper piston rewind tool.

That looks like the one. Only thing is I noticed the kit they had had different discs for the end. So I'm guessing I need to send a bit more for a better kit but at least I know what I'm looking for.

Cheaper way of doing it is to use a screwdriver or chisel on it's side across the grooves to wind it back. Works everytime for me.

The weird thing is that I've been tripping over auctions like that for days without really knowing what it was, until I saw this thread. I thought people used a G clamp or something.

A G clamp will push it back but **** the thread up in the process.

The rewind tool will do the job.

I've hot that same one on my watch list now.

You can use a g clamp on the front but not the back. It's my mates garage were I take my van so I watch what he's doing. Unless it's a few hour job

Even tho he's a mate the money is better off in my pocket

I've always used a really big screw driver and wound them in that way, never had a problem yet!

I use an open pair of long nose pliers on Primera's etc. If they are stuck just give the piston a quick whack with a mallet.

The cheap Draper tool works perfectly well. You don't need to apply much inwards pressure on the piston.

Yes but you're still putting linear rather than rotational force onto the screw thread. A bit like trying to hammer in a bolt

Yeah its a shame its not designed to deal with large hydraulic forces either. Oh wait.
