Recommend a lesser known game

Europa Universalis III - EU3 Forums

Control your nation from 1399 until the end of the Napoleonic era. More than just a world conquering game, you might get as much pleasure from recreating the Irish nation and repelling the English forces as you would from taking over Europe as the French.

For extra enjoyment start your game in Crusader Kings 2, play from 1066 to 1400, convert your save game to EU3, play from 1400 to 1820 then convert your save game to Victoria 2 and play from 1820 to 1900!

Warrior Kings

Summary: Fantasy RTS with brilliant replayability and great storyline. More details in Spoiler below.

Warrior Kings is an ld RTS from 2002 that I keep going back to time and time again. The Wiki link has all the details about it, but in short it is set in a fantasy medieval era where you play as Artos, the son of a Baron killed in cold blood by the leader of The Holy Empire. You play through a very long campaign where your decisions at certain points in it will change the path you take through the game later - essentially there are three main routes, the Imperial path (Holy Empire), the Pagan path (witchcraft and demons), and the Renaissance path (engineering).

It requires the player to micromanage several key elements in order to succeed, such as military might and prowess, "research" advancement, resource management, food supply, diety allignment etc. It also features advanced (for its time) combat characteristics such as high ground giving added distance to archers, flat ground giving cavalary bonuses, different formations effecting movement speed, defense and attack statistics. Very well thought out actually!

It was overlooked in it's time and never got the recognition it deserved in my opinion. As said, this is my "go to" game if I fancy playing an RTS as in my opinion, nothing even comes close to the depth or quality of this game - Age of Empires is the closest comparison and the features of that dwindles in comparison.

Don't think it costs much to buy now, but I would definitely recommend this to anyone that is looking for an involved RTS that they can spend hours getting lost into its world!

Giants: Citizen Kabuto

Wiki

Developed by Planet Moon Studios.
Published by Interplay Entertainment in 2000.

Summary: Fantasy world with a mix of first/third-person shooter-ing and real-time strategy elements. More details in Spoiler below.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto throws you into a fantasy world where you take control of three different style of units throughout the campaign. You start off as Baz, a Meccaryn, a humanoid-type space marine that uses high level technology and weapons to survive. As you play as this character you slowly rescue members of your squad that you can command throughout the game and give insightful, humorous remarks quite frequently.

The second characters is Delphi, a Sea Reaper, a race that thrives in a water environment and is lethal in melee combat and uses deadly magic at range. Whereas the other two races will lose health and drown in water, Sea Reapers actually heal, creating very versatile situations!

Finally, the third character is Kabuto himself, a huge monster that simply wroughts devestation wherever he goes.

The local NPC-race, Smarties, were added to the game and give a great comedic effects in addition to the playable races.

I'll leave the story to the Wiki page if you're interested, but it is definitely worth a read and I think this is a very good game to put some hours into. It is light-hearted fun that requires you to think before running in guns blazing. The comedy value from the NPCs in themselves are worth playing for anyway! :D
