Gaming Rig £1000-2000

The description of the 1220 states that it supports socket 2011, the title does not. Just reported it :)

The Antec product page clearly states that it supports socket 2011, and the product title of the Kuhler 1220 should be updated shortly :p

As it rivals the H100, I'd be surprised if it didn't offer 2011 support but was worth checking on. I just saw it was missing in the description here, I couldnt recall off the top of my head ;) As I say it would be a tight squeeze in the 300R and for the cost of it a good air cooler would make more sense.

train wreck :(

Ok that might have been a little harsh but spending £100 on a cooler than doesnt fit the case is a serious boo boo lol I do like some of the Zalman cases (eg Z9 U3) but it's a budget chassis and not really what I would use in a £2K build. Not sure I agree with what you did with the SSDs, I think the 256GB Plextor Pro was enough for the OS and games. We are all entitled to our own opinions on how to balance the budget though.

I really look forward to seeing what the OP settles on, hopefully our discussions will help him balance out something he really likes :)

well for me, i can't see the point of having a sdd for your o/s only, yes quicker boot times, and the the few apps the sit on it also like the extra boost of speed, but for me the real benefit is when you have your games also on it, so for me a smaller boot drive which acts as the main cache drives for others etc, then another one for games, this for me is the faster one, then a standard hdd for storage etc, but yes we are all are different, cases for me will always be just a box to hold me bits in, i'd never spend a lot on them, and cooler does say it fits both the case and cpu in spec anyway, unless something has changed :(

TBH instead of a caviar black HD I would get two quieter Drives and RAID them.

May as well buy a nicer case as well TBH as you have all that expensive stuff in it.

Not sure it is even worth bothering with Sandy Bridge E? Bit of a waste of money and may as well just get Ivy Bridge?

Also does SLI still cause input lag?

Zakk I own the Z9 Plus and use the U3 a lot. That has the ability to have two 140mm fans in the ceiling of the case but you can't mount a 240mm rad in the ceiling of the case.

I've stopped being lazy and looked for a review of the Z5......it has the same problem :(

The Antec 1220 certainly does support 2011.

We've covered that already stulid ;) I've stopped being lazy but still can't find reviews online to link for the CLC. It was the choice of case they were putting it in that originally bothered me.

I'd like to see your take on the budget :)

For 3D design work NVIDIA is the way to go (if sticking to gaming GPU's). CUDA works better than open gl in my eyes..

Yeah 1k-2k is a big gap.. Narrowing it down may help.

Are you happy to build it yourself?

CUDA and OpenGL aren't comparable because they're not used for the same things.

Also there's the assumption that all 3D design uses CUDA, which it doesn't.

Additionally, kepler isn't great when it comes to compute tasks either.

Realistically, if he's not using CUDA, a radeon card would be the more sensible choice, a pair of 7950s for example.

Radeon card would get better viewport performance, and the extra RAM on them would benefit viewport performance too.
