Rumors about an anti-used game system in the next Xbox -- codenamed Durango -- have swirled for some time now. Vgleaks posted a number of screenshots today, reportedly displaying information contained in the Durango Xbox Development Kit (XDK). The screens, which IGN sources have verified as accurate, confirm a number of rumored features of the next-generation Microsoft console, including a new high-fidelity Kinect sensor. But perhaps a troubling revelation for used game purchasers, the documentation includes a rather blunt reference to mandatory game installs.

"Every Durango console will have a hard drive, although its exact capacity has not been chosen," reads help documentation in the Durango XDK. "It will be large enough, however, to hold a large number of games. All games will be installed on the hard drive. Play from the optical disc will not be supported."

The documentation goes on to state Durango games will be distributed on Blu-ray discs, but the discs are purely used as a means to install data, and will not be read during gameplay. Also of note: the Durango will feature "Always On, Always Connected" online connectivity. Whether Microsoft will use the always-on functionality as a means of DRM is unclear; the documentation only mentions background updates, similar to those announced for the PlayStation 4.

Such a system could spell big trouble for used game retailers like GameStop, and even larger issues for gamers who depend upon the lower cost of second-hand discs.

If this is indeed true that the Discs will be used purely as an installation means...say one time only installation keys or anything form of DRM coming with games would this turn a lot of people off from the next XBox?

I'm still a bit skeptical about this until I hear it straight from Microsoft's mouth, as the rumours about the PS4's one-time use games turned out to be untrue. I don't have an issue with installing games (and I'm guessing that might mean less noise too if the disc isn't being read), but the always on DRM is a bit of a letdown. While I realise most people will probably have internet access, mine's a bit shoddy and I'd rather not have to rely on it to play a Single Player game.

If this is indeed true that the Discs will be used purely as an installation means then used games on the next XBox certainly won't happen, damaging to the retail industry for sure and not great for consumers pockets either. Should this be true I can imagine this will turn a lot of people off from the new XBOX.
Eh? How did you work that out? Halo 4 needs the MP installed, some PS3 games need installing. We aren't using CD codes here. Just installing.

But if the next Xbox uses blu-ray discs, with games up to 50GB in size, and the other rumors that state it'll only come with a 500GB HDD. It'll be used up in no time, not forgetting game updates and apps / dashboard upgrades.

Yeah, I don't get it either

Why does mandatory installs equal the end of the 2nd hand market? Unless the discs explode after installation, or they have a key limiting them to one user?

I'd rather not have to faff around swapping discs to play different games, so to me it sounds good and the way forward.

It depends on how the installation works out though surely? Microsoft could easily implement installation keys/serial numbers with their games for the installation process.

The always on/connected thing is probably why this is being speculated over.

Don't most PS3 and 360 games already require installations? I don't get how this is a problem?

Loading 50GB of data from a spinning disk would mean looooong loading times.

The death of second hand games is a bizarre conclusion to come to from this?

Make the disc spin faster... Increase the density... No excuses really.

I've never seen the issue with this at all. I've owned both PS3 and xbox 360 (although only for 1 year). With the PS3, if it says install, you have to install it. With the xbox, it gives you the option and you choose to install it anyway.

I don't have a problem with it other than the amount of disc space required with blue rays, especially with lazy compression because they haven't been needed to work hard because of the huge data space.

The problem I see for me is currently I install anyway and put the disc in to authenticate my copy. If I need to be connected to the net because it won't require a disc then I'm not buying an Xbox this time around. That's far more important to me than discs or 2nd hand sales. If it requires to always be on they have lost my purchase and I will swap to the Playstation.

The point is though. Why should you need a physical copy at all? That's where we're going.

I'd guess because installing a 50gb game from disc will still be a whole lot quicker for some people than downloading a copy. People with internet usage caps would appreciate being able to install from disc as well.

Sounds similar to activating a PC retail copy on steam to be honest.

It really does not bother about me having to be connected all the time. I mean I do that anyway with my 360.

So if you had an internet problem and we all have them from time to time you might not be able to game. That would pee me off. It was annoying enough when that used to happen in the days when DRM on arcade games/dlc could only be transfered once per year.

Anyway it might not happen but if it does it will drive lots of people to another console.

I install all of my games to disk anyway shorter loading screens and its quieter, although it eats up your HDD, if it will be a complete install then you will need a much larger HDD like a couple of terabytes.

I doubt games will take up 50GB. Crysis Maximum edition only takes 29GB

my PS3 is always on so that it can do its PS+ updates, so i'd not have a problem at all if Nextbox expands on that and looks for updates 24/7.

of course, it's all rumour, but i cant recall seeing any docs that are supposed to be from MS that say online always to play a game.
