How two dick jokes exploded into DDoS and death threats - overreaction from the woman or not?

Its another case of idiots being allowed to put 2 and 2 together and make 10. As others have said, there are plenty of industries which are male or female dominated and it is almost entirely unrelated to discrimination.

Having been interested in technology, going to university and working in IT, I can fairly safely say that the other guys wouldn't have made a girl feel unwelcome. In fact it was the nerdy boys that the unpopular girls hung out with and there was not a chance they would bully a girl.

Despite that, there were no girls at my school interested in IT and there were only a couple on my course at uni. They were like unicorns. I'm sure that traditional values have played a large role in the lack of women in IT but there is no excuse now. Women work in every industry but still few have the interest in technology to pursue it as a career.

This woman is just a bit of a sad act who seems to get satisfaction from feeling like she is a "proper feminist" fighting their cause. You have to make your own way in life. People are not going to come up to you and say "are you ok, is everyone being nice to you, is everyone including you, has anyone said something that was not intended for you that you find offensive"

Feminists are really getting a bad name lately with all the idiotic things they come out with in the name of equality.

For a country which supposedly believes in free speech, Americans are awfully precious aren't they?

Oh my! He's talking about dongles! I'm offended or upset or at least I think I should be!

It's just a case of a lot of IT staff being juvenile and making dongle jokes. Nothing sexist about it, just juvenile jokes that kids make. If they were ranting on about how women shouldn't be employed then fair enough! I've worked at places where the majority were women and some of the jokes are just as bad from them so its just a majority workplace thing.

At work we have 3 women and 3 guys on the IT help desk. The girls on the desk are happy at staying first line and have no interest in tech or learning servers and never attend the technical meetings that everyone gets invites to. It's extremely rare to come across girls in IT at a 2/3rd line level as it just seems that guys prefer to spend hours coding or doing techy nerdy stuff and the girls are wise and stay away from it before their soul is drained. I'm trying to get out of 3rd line now I'm soul less and don't blame people for not being interested in wanting to go that route.

You could look at HR and say its sexist as not many men do it, but again its just a case of the opposite sex not being interested in it for the majority. Nothing wrong with that either.

Lately? Feminism has always been sexist and almost always hypocritical (some of the more extreme feminists are honestly sexist). There have always been feminists seeking to harm male people and raving utter drivel made up from their own fictional world that they apparently mistake for reality - it's inherent in any biological group advocacy ideology to seek to harm "the other" and to go to ludicrous extents to portray "us" as victims of "them". Hence, for example, the whitists who apparently genuinely think that there's a conspiracy of jews and "blacks" to oppress "whites", blah blah blah.

Random example from history: There's a feminist screed from the early 1900s about how men are conducting biological warfare against women in the UK. No joke. It was written by one of the most famous feminists - Christabel Pankhurst.

It's funny, because it implies women are merely tools for male pleasure and have no validity on their own. Well, at least Adria seems to think so. Because since this whole matter was so disgusting, surely that means that no female friends sitting next to each other have ever made a sexual joke or even checked out some guy and told their friend "That guy over there is fit, right?"

I also assume that Adria is decidedly asexual since she finds anything relating to sex so disgusting. This was a joke that had a sexual context in a completely harmless manner - had they perhaps joked to each other that "Oh, I'd like to rape this girl in front of us" then at least her cause of offense could have been excusable. It wasn't even sexist, because it in no way referred to women as somehow inferior to men - it simply had a sexual context and only someone completely against sex full stop can find such offensive.

On a seperate note, I did witness some genuine sexism the other day. As in, actual sexism DIRECTED towards another human being. A lady was shopping for a chocolate bar, when an intoxicated stranger just randomly started telling her that "she didn't need it because she looked good enough, and she shouldn't ruin her figure".

Its just kind of annoying that she is being put on a pedestal by a lot of young girls as the voice of reason and someone to look up to. People like her would have actually debate issues in the past yet now she simply posts online and waits for all her supporters to come in and tell her how wonderful she is.

As mentioned before however, as soon as other men start siding with these feminists, they are instantly validated and any male opposition is irrelevant as they already have the support of "right thinking" men.

Personally I've always seen computers as being a nerdy pastime. Like sci fi I'd have assumed that made it quite outsider friendly.

I really don't like this whole bully/I've-never-seen-a-girl vibe big sections of nerd-dom are giving off at the moment.

That's a strange view to have - firstly I wouldn't have associated nerds/geeks with bullying other than as victims of it... then ironically you chuck in a typical bullying steriotype of nerds/geeks: 'I've-never-seen-a-girl' - makes your point rather vacant.

I'd be interested to know whether you work in software or you're just steriotyping and relying on blind prejudice? I work in a software firm and of the female co-workers I work with they're generally well respected - they've in some ways got an inherent advantage simply because they're in a minority and therefore more visible to management etc... You've got a few hundred or so guys and the senior managers maybe each only know half of them by name... you have a handful of girls and pretty much everyone knows who they are - if they're good/productive people know about it. Tbh.. one of the best project managers we've had was female and didn't actually have any formal project management qualifications... she was simply very visible to a senior manager, seen to generally have her **** together and incredibly well organised - they gave her a shot at it - it worked.

This whole thing has got naff all to do with sexism other than the inherently sexist views of a feminist with an agenda who chose to take offense at something in order to facilitate her own self promotion. The reaction she's got is the reaction pretty much anyone gets when they do something that is widely condemned on the internet. Whether you're a Fox news presenter who's gone OTT, a policeman who's pepper sprayed Californian students or someone like the woman in this case - the resulting hate mail isn't a result of of anything other than your own actions. Not that I condone death threats etc.. that's messed up - but I doubt its the result of sexism/woman hating geeks etc.. rather its a subsection of the standard group response to people who become widely disliked and generate lots of negative news/discussion online these days.

No, I wouldn't have either which is why it's p annoying.

Still awaiting Cliffy B's death threat campaign for penning an article which ran in Kotaku supporting Anita Sarkeesian.

That should make him really unpopular, no?

who?

I had to google him - am not massively into computer games but tbh.. unless whatever he wrote has generated a similar level of coverage/controversy then it would seem doubtful really. Don't quite see what your point is - if you want examples of males who've been subjects of hate campaign/threats as a result of their actions then I've already provided two in my previous post.

Another perspective on the woman in question.

I read that article a few days back, how people are still inviting this woman to things is beyond me, regardless of her up bringing if she can't act like a decent human being while working maybe she is in the wrong job all together.

The IT world is quite male-centric in some ways but things like this are only going to make it worst, while she is probably convinced he is helping woman in the Industry by being this strong figure, nope she is just being a complete bitch and taking little private jokes between other people and over reacting.

That article also has another one of her 'wibbles' where she complained about a T-Shirt being sexists, she clearly reads too far into things or see's things that are not there. For example when I saw the t-shirt which offender her it thought it looked like 2 woman, not 1 woman saying something silly and a man saying the smart punch line as she seemed to interpret it.

All in all I am glad she has also lost her job, but only because those other 2 developers where affected by this, and to think it could have all been avoided by being sensible.

It's nice to see some sensible articles in all of this, the whole thing spiraled madly out of all proportion. All that should have happened if she had an issue with what they were saying (which I can't see as anyway sexist, simply childish jokes from 2 slightly bored programmers) was she had a quiet word with them, if they responded rudely or she still had issue then talk to the organisers directly.

However, looking at her blog she seems to see it as her mission in life to fight all 'sexist' battles, to the point she looks for conflict where there's none to be found.

The internets anonymous reaction is typically vile, and they forget that while you may dislike her or her actions she's still a person and doesn't deserve 99% of the abuse that was poured on her - it depresses me that so many people can't express their opinion about a person without being so offensive.

All in all a depressing chain of events that resulted in 2 companies losing face, and 2 people losing their jobs over a joke about dongles and forking.

She also tweeted sexist and racist comments during this episode but none of the journalists I've read mention it because they are too busy portraying her as the victim.

Black people CANNOT be racist against White people. Racism is a position of the oppressor who has the power

wow, she is a real hypocrite isnt she?

what a ****ing joke. its hardly the most offensive stuff she will ever hear. lets hope she doesnt have an xbox... hearing really offensive stuff she might explode.

how did the 2 guys get the sack? surely unfair dismissal? although its said that they had other issues who really buys that? a bit convenient no?

as said above, all she has done is made males not want to employ women. she is setting back the clock by her actions.

purile willy jokes shouldnt offend anyone.

There's no barrier to entry for women that I can see.

They just don't seem to be all that interested in it. Or at least not as fond of gadgets and tech as us blokes. Why that constitutes a "problem" is beyond me.

How about this... the bin men I see collecting our trash each week are 100% always men. Ever hear women complain that they can't get a job as a bin-person? Nah.

Are we going to have to put up with so-called "positive discrimination" type measures in technology now? So the PC brigade can feel better?

well said.

its like those feminists you meet that moan about blokes and them being useless. then you see them out with little skirts on flirting for cheap drinks off blokes. feminism when it suits them. they want men to open doors for them too.... hypocrites

hmmmm..

what is worrying is that she has no proof of the accusation.

i mean she took a picture, posted it on twiter and said what she heard. For all we know, someone could make up the 'dialogue' and put a photo and start a similar problem. People are too quick to jump the gun.

Take a picture of someone, make up a quote they alledgedly said, post it on the internet and watch them suffer..great

hmmm.... as said, how can she prove any of this?

That alex reid photo, WTF!

you didnt know he was a tranny? IMO he looks like jordan even more in that pic :D

FoxEye made a very good point, there really is no barrier preventing women in the IT industry, just no women want to do it.

For example on my Comp Sci degree there where maybe 20 females in the entire year of 350, not all of those completed the course and several dropped in the first year, so from my experience alone I did not see many women queueing up to be Computer Scientists.

But then again on the reverse, nursing. My gf did nursing at uni and had very few males on her course. No barrier just males are not as interested in that sort of career (this is of course just from my experience not speaking males/females everywhere).

Also im not entirely sure what Adra's goal is with her past record. She just makes it worst but soldiers on regardless like some 10th century crusade to the holy land.
