The Sun to go behind paywall

I wonder how many people actually use the Sun website now or any papers site - surely there are too many other ways to get news that there is now no need to pay?

The main issue is that most ad funded journalistic news sites don't make money. Those that do make money tend to employ very small numbers of staff and concentrate on rehashing and commenting on stories generated by others. They rarely investigate or break stories as they don't have the resources.

If no-one investigates or actually engages in journalism then where will the news come from?

You'll be left with BBC, Sky News and PA / Reuters. Everything else will be comment and opinion dressed up as news.

Of course I'm going completely off topic taking about journalism in a thread about The Sun.

The Sun follows the Telegraph which announced yesterday that it would begin charging readers for online access.

It will allow online readers free access to 20 articles each month, following which they will be charged a monthly subscription fee.
I probably don't even look on the Sun's website as often as 20 times a year, so it should not affect me. :D

Isn't the Sun and Sky Murdoch outlets ? I wouldn't call what either do as investigative rather sensationalist.

Not a great loss for the Sun to be taken out of mainstream internet - downside is their readership will migrate to DM (bigotry mixed with flesh)

I did say The Sun was OT when it came to journalism. However, Sky News invest a lot in their own stories on TV and this naturally filters down to the website. You might think they are a Murdoch mouthpiece but they report the news and send journalists out to find stories themselves.

Sadly I work for the DM.

But at the rate the circulation is plummeting I won't be in my job for much longer.

And no, I don't have any input on their stories :p

Their website is going though the roof though. I've always wondered if they make any money out of it.

TMG is an interesting move; they were tapping me up to go and work for them in January; they are obviously planning some substantial changes behind the scenes to help push their paywall.

Murdoch is a dinosaur, it's time he ***** everything others had built for him in this country over the years with one swift but fantastically stupid move. And then just let this stupid newspaper title die (probably natural death as the of the last thumb twiddling, page 3 oggling building crew stretching lunch hour from 8 to noon in a hideout of greasy spoon somewhere in Lewisham gets replaced by foreign brigade).

This may actually give a boost to The Guardian for example who will likely see additional traffic as a result, the more views they can have per story the more revenue generated per story.

Might help it get its losses below £30m per year.

For all the ****ging it gets The Sun does make around £60m a year in profit do there is a market somewhere.

I'm surprised to hear that a sun reader knows how to use a computer.
