Can my life be changed? (Being deaf)

What the hell? Even I posted in that thread... I have no idea what I said, but I can tell you for sure that it was Nitefly that started it. He always starts it :p

My girlfriend has a hearing problem, not quite as severe as some being discussed in this thread but she does have hearing aids that she hardly ever uses. Subtitles on TV are the norm, can't talk to each other in separate rooms unless shouting quite loudly. I tried her hearing aids a couple of times and they've really made hardly any difference to me, she says they make a massive difference! Weird.

Yes, pretty sure it was mainly the 2nd post, so it will have been Nitefly.

Subtitles are the norm for me as well, especially with comedy. My aids are in for as long as I'm awake, same with contact lens.

Not at all, been wearing them all my life. However, I was wondering if there was a way to remove it completely visually. So I look "normal".

I find your statement quite depressing 5UB. Were you picked on at school due to your hearing? I spent primary school with a best friend who was severely handicapped. He never got bullied, but I don't doubt that perhaps in a city school instead of the small town school we went to he may well have.

I watched one of your magic video's not so long ago, and I didn't notice hearing aids. I think as time goes on people become more accepting or even don't see peoples disabilities as issues. Your speech is certainly that of a hearing person?

As others have said, if you're happy then that's all that matters really. If you desperately want some smaller hearing aids, and feel they would actually improve your confidence then maybe you can trial some somewhere? Finance is a bad bad thing, but you appear to be in a safe job and if it's something that improves your daily being then I say go for it!

/end of man love session :p

Yes Zefan you aint deaf! Try mine you may have a free de wax lol :p :D

Out of interest would deaf members if offered the option have an operation to restore full hearing? I personally would never change the fact I am deaf. I would however restore my sight.

I'm really worried that I may one day lose hearing in my right ear, after gigs I keep getting a ringing in my ear that can be quite persistent. Decided from now on to wear earplugs while DJing, booth speakers are just too dangerous without them.

My wife has high frequency hearing loss, she has tried several different types of hearing aids over the years. She did get the in ear ones on the NHS a few years back, they chewed through batteries and constantly went wrong. She is back to digital over the ear ones now.

Obviously being female she has long hair so has never been that conscious of them, she has always been more paranoid about her speech. They still don't know why she is deaf, even had MRI etc recently to try to determine the cause, she has been deaf from birth but it wasn't discovered until she was about 7.

I lost my hearing in both ears about 8 years ago with my left technically being better than my right but the sound has no meaning so i cope with just one aid in my right ear - I have two different types of hearing aid with one being a nhs skin tone for day to day usage and then a Siemens aquaris which is 100% waterproof when going to the gym, shooting, swimming and listening to music in the bath ( that was the main reason for spending £2k as I missed it the most....) and its bright blue as I wanted people to easily see that I had a hearing problem rather than trying to hide it plus it has a Bluetooth control unit that allows me to send music straight to it or hear my mobile phone - technology is great.

With stem cell treatment on the horizon maybe one day all deaf people can feel normal again.....

Stem cells would potentially solve this in future,

along with blindness,

but brb, RELIGEOS PEOPLE BLOCKING RESEARCH CUZ ITS WRANNNNNNGGGGG

stfu you are not ones blind....

Doctor will not recommend you to get cochlea implant if you are adult and it is too late.

Kids usually get a cochlea implant and they will have to get used to it as they grow up.

If you do a lot of sport activities then cochlea implant is not recommended.

I'm deaf and I wear hearing aids in both ears. I was diagnosed at 2 and half years old. I'm 30 in November. Sometimes hearing aids were a pain as a child with infection and ear aches meaning I couldn't wear my hearing aids at times. I remember sometimes having to take a week or two off school because of problems like this.

I've learned to cope with my hearing loss and I think I manage quite well on a day-to-day basis. If I had the choice then I would love not to be deaf but I'm not at all sure what caused my hearing. I believe I got an infection that damaged my cochlea but I honestly don't know why I'm deaf. It's quite incredible what my doctors never told me when I saw them in London when I went with a parent. Once I became I teenager I 'rebelled' a little and went on my own. It's been years since I was last seen by my consultant in London. I lip read a bit but I don't sign at all.
