Talk to me about Surrey/Hampshire

All I can say is don't go for Staines or egham :p

Egham isn't that bad. I work there and it's pretty quiet. It's filled with students and old people.

I live in Camberley and it's fairly nice but to go anywhere by train, I have to drive to Farnborough or Woking. The Camberley train station is a pain to get anywhere to.

Well we've been living in a 1 bed flat for 3 years, and the gf REALLY wants a garden again, plus I want to have a catproofed garden for our currently indoor only cat.

Thanks again all, more food for thought.

Krooton, I seem to remember you buying your current flat similar time to me. Was it on this HomeBuy direct scheme?

Just remembered about this now!

Only reason I ask is because Iam on the same scheme as you and might sell soon and just wondered if the process is as straight forward and a normal house/flat sell?

Haven't looked in to it yet, but I would assume it depends on if the buyer is also using a scheme or not.

If not, my understanding is that the buyer pays whatever, then that is split out between us and the equity loan, and bob's your uncle.

Probably will be trickier if the buyer is also using a scheme.

I've lived in Guildford for 4 years, owning my own house here for 1.5yrs. I paid £240k for a 3 bed house with nice garden in a good area of the town.

Guildford itself is a nice town, lots to do with good shops, restaurants etc. The traffic can be busy but I don't think much more then any big town. Sure there are some areas to avoid but again its the same as any town.

I'd recommend it!

Avoid Farnborough and Ash Vale!! :p

I'm currently living in Farnborough (air show is annoying) and work in Weybridge. Train is only 20 mins and 3 stops away.

Fleet is ok I guess. Out of the list I would probably pick Guildford though.

Where in weybridge do you work, krooton?? :D
Do you not mean the ***** area of Ash? Ash and Ash Vale are two completely different places.

Farnborough on the other hand is a complete and utter hole.

Is renting disproportionately expensive in this area? House prices seem not much more than where I am now (new build outside Southampton) but rental prices seem to be almost 50% higher than I'm paying?

You've also got the Camberley spur line that has Ash Vale on it, which opens up:

Frimley
Bagshot
Ascot
Camberley

Surrounding them you've got Lightwater, Sandhurst, Blackwater etc.

Horsey wise, there are loads of places around Ash Vale, Normandy, Pirbright. Brookwood has a road that links through Pirbright to Ash Vale (Cemetry Pales).

Commute wise you really want to stay on the main line (Fleet - Fbo - Brookwood - Woking - Weybridge - Waterloo) as it's a lot quicker than the slower spur line that feeds through Ascot.

I'd probably err towards Fleet, or the nicer parts of Farnborough. Or Frimley Green if you don't mind a ride/walk through the Hatches lakes to get to the station (about 25 minutes from Frimley Green).

Thanks for that, that's my understanding of it too. Let me know how it goes! Hope it works out ok for you!
