Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [29th March - 1st April 2013]

The BBC question asker person man is absolutely woeful. What was it he asked the new Southampton manager, was he gonna thank the ex-boss for the squad he's now doing well with? What on earth...

O'neill deserves it, despite losing to Utd which you'd frankly expect, the performance was terrible, Utd were terrible and yet still won and Sunderland had a single and truly pathetic shot on target. You've got to stay up, Utd play a weakened team and you drop Larsson? There is a reason the team was built around Larsson in the last few years, because he's by a mile their best player. O'neill has focused on Segnesson since he arrived and unfortunately he's a showy player with no end product, he's Gervinho basically, looks like he gets on the ball a lot, runs a lot, does exactly nothing useful in most games, gets a few goals off the basis of taking so many shots and the team focusing on him but is actually crap.

Bendtner/Larsson were excellent last year, Bendtner's movement, hold up play, choosing the right lay off more often than not and Larsson's ability to move the ball up the field, world class delivery(most consistent in the league IMHO). So O'neill decided Segnesson was worth keeping, got Fletcher who can finish but can't do what Bendtner did and what worked for the team, and basically killed off Larsson by shoving him in central midfield, still good but the team lost any drive on the wing.

He got fired because the utterly toothless awful performance today was down to misusing the team he has, buying badly, and generally being rubbish, not because Utd were unbeatable.

Fletcher's scored a few but other strikers have done as well/better for far less cash. They needed a better CB's, strikers, fullback and a non thug in central midfield, instead he did what he does, spent incredibly badly, 14mil on one player that isn't good enough, instead of 14mil on the 3-4 players they needed.

It's party this, and party wasting 20m on turd strikers.

You're right though 14m on one waste of space striker is nothing considering the places they needed to spend! Playing Titus Shambles at cb still pretty much sums up all of Sunderland's problems all in one. Hardly good enough for the champ so I have no idea why he his leading the back line of premier league team.

Going down will do them good (other than financially) just because they will offload the turd and sort out the squad (probably with McLeish at the helm)...

Looking like 8 teams are in a relegation battle, i would personally love to see Stoke go down and Wigan + Villa to stay up.

Nope One of Villa/wigan have to be relegated! Its the rules, both staying up will make it too easy for promoted team next year...

Villa have been the worst team I have seen this season, all their problems come from Paul Lambert being an idiot when Wigan just plane aren't good enough.

On the other hand seeing Stoke or Norwich (stoke mrk 2) go down suddenly appeals, but I am not sure how that works with QPR and Reading being pretty much down already...

Villa's issues aren't Lambert, that team was awful last year, and getting worse, its closer to a youth team than a premiership team. Benteke was one of the better buys in the summer, I'm not sure many people could have done better. While O'neill certainly didn't do awfully at Villa in terms of results, he did it while spending huge sums of cash and left Villa at a time they had a bloated, stupidly expensive and massively under performing squad. In the past couple years there has been huge player turn over, most of the quality left 2-4 years ago leaving mostly the hangers on sucking huge wages out, and now its just the youngsters and a few others left over.

I want Stoke, QPR and Sunderland to go down, Sunderland are plain awful, Stoke are the least entertaining team in the league and more importantly try the least to be entertaining, sport is entertainment after all. QPR are just lol, Villa as above have had the worst squad and no cash with which to improve and are actually doing very well for the squad they have. Wigan aren't THAT bad, they just don't seem to bother till the last 10-15 games of the season, Newcastle have been dire this season but people underestimate the change in moving into Europe and that many extra games and it was massively compounded by a horrible year of injuries.

Look at West Ham, first year of Zola West Ham played excellent and entertaining football, the next year they had 3-4 guys miss well over half the season, and another 10 players miss maybe 1/3 of a season but constantly in and out and no one getting any form, the team fell apart. Newcastle have had guys in and out of the team all year with a busier schedule. Next year without Europe and likely with a lot of injury problems fixed they'll be vastly improved again.

Southampton should not go down, by far the most intent on attacking and being entertaining team in the relegation fight this year, plenty of great games, taken it to the top teams in the league, none of this resting the team against Utd or playing 10 behind the ball going for a draw cack. HOpefully stay up this year and finish in the top half next year if they can buy a couple CB's.

I have little sympathy for Villa as they appointed a rubbish manager in Mcleish, then this season filled the defence with kids whilst casting aside experienced pros like Warnock, Hutton, Collins etc (not that I'm saying they were great players by any stretch of the imagination but some of the dross I've seen from Villa this season has been atrocious - I think I mentioned it in the spoiler thread that week but Villa against QPR was pretty much the worst game I can remember seeing this decade). I'm sure some it has come from the board in terms of getting big earners out of the squad but they were the ones who signed the contracts in the first place. The whole Darren Bent situation is a bit bizarre as well given his goal record, yes Benteke has done well but when fit I would have played Bent as his partner in home games certainly above the likes of Weimann.

As for wanting teams to go down it always makes me chuckle with pundits saying "hopefully they will stay up" about nearly every team in the bottom half - three teams MUST be relegated so logically you can't hope that they all stay up. Saying you don't want any team to go down is equivalent to saying you don't want to see any teams promoted for winning the Championship.

Elliot was poor yesterday.

We were going to lose anyway but the third and fourth goals were his fault. Biggest ting is being able to put this all behind them and be ready for next week, they need to beat Fulham, failure to do that could more than likely be relegation. We need to win the next two because after that they are all tough, big problem which I've been saying all year though was the failure to invest in the summer, that cost is big.

Feel bad for O'Neil, he was poor but the players are the ones at fault. Apart from Fletcher and Mignolet their whole team has either been **** or average. Most at fault are Sess and Johnson, as the two main "creators" they have been a joke.

Typically they will now have the "bounce" of a new manager coming into the derby.

Steve McLaren is not in for the Sunderland job. His agent has said that they've already decided on a new manager.

Liverpool XI: Reina, Johnson, Enrique, Carragher, Agger, Lucas, Henderson, Gerrard, Coutinho, Downing, Suarez.

Aston Villa XI: Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Baker, Bennett, Westwood, Bannan, Sylla, Agbonlahor, Weimann, Benteke.

Glad we won 4-1 but again it was Reading so nothing really amazing id have to say, Thankfully Chelsea lost:p but was hoping Spurs would lose as well to Swansea, who after their cup win have gone to complete and utter turd. Looks like Gervinho has come back from his break to become possibly a better footballer??, scored one and set up Carzola and Giroud. Plus he didnt play too badly against Bayern in the CL game a few weeks ago. But still cant stand him as its only a matter of time before he goes back to his useless self:p

Surprised to hear O'Neill has been sacked, some of these owners are crazy...only a week ago it was Reading and now Sunderland have sacked their manager. I dont see the point of doing that so late in the season :/.

As for who id like to go down, i dont really care but id like to see Wigan finally go down this season but as its been a few seasons now, they manage to get themselves out of the relegation zone around about this time:p.

I love Martinez too much for Wigan too go down. They can't. They can't.

I used to like him a lot but lost a lot of respect for him after the whole shambles with the Haidara tackle that almost finished that lads career. Thought his comments were disgusting along with his owners as well.

Yeah Wigan are the only team I'm pretty keen on staying up, Cheets apart there's not much not to like about Wigan (and I'm by no means influences by the all but guaranteed 6 points they provide every season)

Come on Liverpool, important to keep villa down in the doldrums of the league..... This is what its come down to, me looking at other results rather than Newcastle's
