Insurance rip off if your unemployed !!!

Being ocuk there will be a complete lack of sympathy for the unemployed, but I do see this as ridiculous. Doubling the premium due to one factor? For reference, declaring a bucket seat increased my premium by 1%. Think about the reasons one would make such a change, then compare the risk to covering someone who sits on their arse most of the time and can barely afford to drive anywhere?

The unemployment brings in many factors.

The main one being the fact you have no money, so the likely hood of you makin a claim to repair your car, due to afore mentioned lack of money is extremely high in the event of any accident.

You or I hit a barking bollard, we jump up and down and swear, book the car into the body shop and swallow the £600 repair cost.

If you didn't have a job, and the same accident happens how else are you going to fix it without making a claim?

Since when does unemployed mean you have no money? That is a terrible and huge assumption to make. You might have won the lottery or had a redundancy pay packet...

People who have a job but then become unemployed aren't any more stupid than those who still have a job. They still know that claiming for a x y z will result in a large increase in premium next year..

Without means testing everyone you insure you cannot make that assumption.

It will be based on statistical analysis.

The impact of all these millions of secret millionaire drivers will of already been taken into consideration.

You said it was a 'fact that you have no money' hmm that isn't a fact at all. That is your own conjecture.

What I believe to be happening is that there is a large criminal underclass of estate dossers who put down 'unemployed' as an occupation. These guys claim for everything and may induce car thefts or crashes to gain compo payouts.

They are skewing the stats.

Say you lost your job tomorrow are you more likely to make a claim? Are you suddenly an increased risk or are you simply now in a classification of serial claimants ?

Its not that they will empty your bank account on becoming unemployed and make you susceptible to irrational driving decisions.

If he'd said that becoming unemployed meant you have reduced disposable income I would agree. Most people getting made unemployed still have their savings or have a redundancy etc..

They don't instantly turn poor...

Not so much that you may claim more, you will probably self service your car, if at all, the car is likely not to be in such a good condition, cheaper end of the market.

Most costs are third party and so damage to the insured's car figures less.

Can you really select those as occupations?

Never checked it on a form, but I think theoretically you should be able to, as it is a full-time role and you do have a source of income (your spouse).

If you are a single unemployed parent, or are housewife/husband to an unemployed person, then I guess you have no regular source of income and it's classed as a different situation. In principle at least.

This year something amazing happened to my bike insurance:

1) My renewal was 20% cheaper than last years
.

I was loaded 20% on my Bike because I hit a Fox with my car, I tried pointing out that if I hit a Fox on the Bike I'd probably not be claiming.........:D

I fell fowl of this a couple of weeks back.

Came to insure my little Polo for the coming year. Renewal appears and I brace myself and have a look. £246, So I'm thinking cool about the same as last year. So think I'll do it over the phone and get it done with. I get asked the usual questions has anything changed, etc?

Now I've just come out of work so mention that I'm no longer an NHS technician, but unemployed for the moment. Oh he says that might effect the premium, I'll check.... £409!!

Wtf is that all about, I have the car down for business use and am out and about every single day when working. Now I'm off and the cars sat in the garage they increase the premium by £160. Talk about kicking a man when he's down. I'm astonished and disgusted in equal measure.

Anyway having told him to stick where the sun don't shine after a little Google and ring round, I managed to get the premium down to £300ish including breakdown.

Who has actually informed their insurance prior to its renewal that they have became "unemployed". In fact how many people having recently become unemployed just say " no change" in circumstances when renewing their policy - i bet a lot of people are guilty of this unknowingly. I would have never known that being unemployed would increase premiums by so much nor would it have ever crossed my mind to ring my insurance to tell them.

Same here never crossed my mind that a change I occupation may effect my premium (unless associated with use of the vehicle in respect to work/business/milages)

I just happened to have time on my hands with being off, so rang them to renew it and see if that was their best price. He just asked "has anything changed" while checking my details. I mentioned just coming out of work, and that was it...

Of course if the information on you renewal in not correct that just gives them an excuse to void any potential claim. It's worth noting that when you do some of the on-line multi-quote searches some don't even ask about occupation.!! It's just another way of ripping folk off.

Anyway it's lost them my custom so more fools them. It is irritating that no matter what service, everyone is looking to rip people off as a matter of course. Gas, electricity, garages,, etc. Unless you explicitly ask them for the best deal available, and check every item on the bill they are content to charge you the most the can get away with.

What's the catchphrase "Rip off Britain"

Use housewife or house Husband for a lower quote

Ok, just been on confsed.com and checked Unemployed, Housewife/House Husband and Employed. The cheapest quotes in that order are
£398, £239 and £191
Retired comes out at £201.
