More XBox Rumours...Constant Internet Connection Required

Yeah there will still be loads of places with no or poor internet that this will effect. I personally think the always online thing is certain to happen with devices in the future so I hope if this is true, that MS see out the rough start that might happen and stick with it.
I'm still most likely getting a PS4 though. :p

I can see the always on internet only being for digital copies of games. I can't see it happening for physical copies. Even PC games don't require an always on connection to play, only activate.

For disk versions of a game I can see Microsoft tying a serial to a gamertag/live account to try and stop games being sold on but that's as far as I think they will ever go, for this gen at least. Even then I think it will be a toss up between loss of games sales from 2nd hand or loss of console sales due to people not liking the restrictions. I suppose we will all find out soon enough the direction Microsoft are going to go. I still can't see me buying either at the moment.

Maybe MS aren't actually bothered about what the gamers think, and are focussing on what the publishers want? i.e. restrict second-hand game sales, curb piracy, etc

Could it be the case that whilst the gamer may think, sod that, I'll go with the PS4. Publishers may be inclined to publish their games first/foremost on the MS console as they may perceive better returns? Just brain dumping a thought, you know how these companies work!!

Agreed, at first I was against it.

But if it stops people being lemons and modding/hacking on consoles then I don't care.

almost every game i own that has MP capability has been ruined by idiots.
What MS are looking to do is nothing to do with stopping hacking, its all to do with stopping piracy. No doubt youll still see those MP games being ruined unless the developers actively monitor and fix with patches, that is unless those patches start costing them too much money to employ...

Shock horror, internet is full of kids who aren't afraid to run their mouths.

Mouthy kids are funny, and add to the fun of the game, cheating isn't fun...

I know it's about piracy and profits, but IF it helps towards less modding then I'm all for it.

But going to wait and see what everyone has to offer before making a purchase of course.

Theres no IF, the ideas that are floating around just dont encompass stopping hacking/cheating, no doubt MS has other schemes to prevent that (though TBH thats the developers remit), but dont think for a minute that the 'always on' requirement is one of them.

That is total and complete lies. Sony's idea of attacking Microsoft's sales.

Any basis to back that statement up? I appreciate the always online is a rumour so needs to be taken with a pinch or 10 of salt but to actively blame Sony for spreading lies seems very fanboyish. For all I know though you work in Sony marketing and PR so do know it is Sony telling lies.

Not the end of the world for me but would be an inconvenience for me, I have 2 PC's and xbox in the same room and all wired up but only 1 port on the wall so would have to add another to leave the xbox always connected. These rumours worry me but I am content waiting for the full specs of both before choosing.

I think Microsoft have lost touch with the core gamer. Over the last few years there's been too much emphasis on Kinect, Avatars, on demand TV/Music services and not enough 'proper' exclusive games.

Although I don't buy used games and an 'always online' console wouldn't hinder me too much, I feel it's a step too far. I'll look to the competition if Microsoft actually go down this route.

Trust me, if MS does it and achieves a good level of success with the next xbox you can bet Sony will quickly forget anything they have said previously and quickly follow suit. Rumble in control pads anyone?

Sony has said its not going to do this always online to play a game, now if the developer requires it, in that case the PS4 will have to be always online.
Its been pretty much confirmed now, indirectly of course, you will need to be online to play any game, with only 3 minute offline allowed until the game stops, but im not sure how much of an issue it is.
I guess the only big problem is if the live servers go down when a massive game is released, a bit like what happened with Diablo 3. It could also suffer the annoying (IMO) problem that some PC games have when you get your game before the activation servers are online.
Nothing is 100% yet so im not sure why most of the net seem to be so riled up against it.

I hope they have good firewalls & DDOS protection, imagine the fallout whenever their servers get attacked. Sony will probably hire Anonymous. :D
