New BMW's not like what they once were?

That probably matters in an S3, but I'd imagine the way the M135i drives is more important than how soft the seats feel on your arse.

True, but to me the red leather feels a lot nicer? I've been in two 3 series recently, one a 2006 5 door 320 and another a 2011 330 and both had black leather seats and weren't to my liking. The red leather in the E46 M3 I almost bought felt much nicer.

lol, seriously?

I would imagine that is nothing at all to do with what colour the leather is - after all, in each model changing the colour alone results in exactly the same type of leather.

The M3 will have had more expensive Nappa leather fitted.

You don't actually think for a moment I thought it was the same leather but the colour made it feel better?

lol, seriously?

I wasn't aware of the name of the leather in the M3, whatever it is, it's a lot nicer than the naff stuff in the 'normal' models.

I'm fairly certain as well an 135i that someone I know owns (or owned) and it has nicer (red) leather.

That seemed to be what you were saying, yes.

There is no link between the colour and the quality (exept where certain colours are restricted to nappa but thats not the case with red) - you can get red normal leather as well as black nappa leather..

You can also get short or coarse grain to suit the trim levels, ie cheaper for entry level leather. Some markets also 'downgrade' the leather as its more tolerant to solar load and heating, ie UAE markets.

Basically you get what you pay for.

Verrryyy sweet, what colour you go for in the end? And we'll need pictures...

I went for Estoril Blue, I just think it looks stunning and when you're spending £30k on an otherwise standard looking hatch I wanted a colour that would stand out a bit :)

Love the M135i, the test drive I had was one of the best I've ever experienced.

But the accolade of "fastest hot hatch" is with the RS3 :P

The RS3 looks stunning but in reality there really isn't anything between it and the M135i. The fact the M135i actually kicks out closer to 340bhp just confirms that. I reckon with a rolling start the BMW would be faster. To be fair at least the Audi has a proper engine which also sounds immense and not another bloody 4-pot. I'll certainly be up for a play if I come across an RS3 driver!

exhaust tips on M135i are being swapped FOC by dealers with a little persuation, rusty seat bases are now resolved on new builds and again swapped out FOC by dealers

I have read of one unlucky owner with a faulty manual transmission, so wouldn't get too hung up on it,mine is fine with 3k on it. Same dry sump box as in the 1M

TBH most of the BMW 1 series forums are full of wibbling wrecks who expect a Rolls Royce for £30k :)

I know what you mean about some of the users having unrealistic expectations.

Have you got yours yet? I am like a child I really am so excited, I just can't get over how ridiculously, monstrously quick it is. The test drive was hilarious, even the salesman was laughing at how stupidly rapid it was!

An RS3 shouldn't be difficult - I've managed to outdo an RS3 in as straight line with the 535d...

The 535d is a rapid car but I doubt realistically it could out run an RS3. 300bhp or so in these small hatches may not sound that much in the grand scheme of things, but the fact is they are hatchbacks with low weight. I honestly was astonished at how ludicrously fast the M135i was, particularly how quickly it destroys road with minimal effort. The official 0-62 time of 4.9 seconds is actually quite misleading. I would imagine the RS3 is very similar.

It would seem that many 1M owners (the proper M one) don't keep them very long and I have seen a few now who have all said the same. A little one dimensional once you get over the initial buzz and not as captivating as an M3 for example. I wonder if this will also be the case with this one?

At 24 and the M135i being my first car, I have little experience driving performance cars although I understand your point. If anything the M135i felt a little clinical, it was just effortlessly quick. Whilst I was blown away I was also a bit saddened that the days of revving the hell out of cars to extract the performance are over. I have no doubt an M3 would be much more fun to drive but the M135i is in the same league performance wise. It also has that Jekyll & Hyde personality, one minute it's a comfortable, quiet daily driver but in sport mode it's a brutally fast machine.

If only the M135i had the looks of the 1M. In my eyes the 1M looks stunning, I love its aggressive stance.

My first car was a Mini 1000 and I feel fairly positive that wasn't as good as an M135. Great first car, just don't die dead in it please, lots of horses for an inexperienced driver and you will be getting places quickly. I have to same auto box in my 530D and in 20K miles its been faultless.

I'll be the first to admit that I am not an experienced driver in the grand scheme of things. I'll certainly take it easy, particularly during the run in phase although even below 4000RPM the thing is still stupidly quick :D

I'm pretty sure the last few months have been the longest of my life. Only 15 days or so to go :)

Great feeling getting a new performance car. I still remember driving my first M3 out of the showroom on a Saturday morning after shooing a few nosey punters away from it. Great feeling as they pulled the doors back and let me literally drive it out of the showroom :D

The M135i is a twin turbo, isn't it? What does it rev to and where is its max torque?

Edit:
Max. output in kW (hp) at 1/min
235 (320) / 5,800

Max. torque in Nm at 1/min
450 / 1,300 - 4,500

I guess it redlines at 6k rpm?

Mine has 350 HP. I guess the RS3 suffers at higher speeds due to the drivetrain. Where do you get they have low weight from? The Audi figure seems to be 1575 Kg, presumably their usual excluding driver figure, so 1650 Kg including. The E60 535d is only 1735 Kg!

EDIT: Confirmed, 1650 Kg including driver (206 HP/ton): http://www.schwab-kolb.com/audi/en/etd_rs_3_sportback.pdf, so a whole 85 Kg lighter than a 6 cylinder diesel 5 Series. I'd call that pretty overweight for a little hatchback :p

The M135i has 213 HP/ton.

If it's like my RS4 it will also be 12bhp.
