I know what you mean about some of the users having unrealistic expectations.
Have you got yours yet? I am like a child I really am so excited, I just can't get over how ridiculously, monstrously quick it is. The test drive was hilarious, even the salesman was laughing at how stupidly rapid it was!

Also, even keeping it to the running in 4k limit, you will still be extracting the majority of its performance.

Yea, my ep3 has done 107k miles and is on the original clutch/gearbox/engine, pretty much everything... but that's irrelevant.
3k miles in a car is effectively nothing.
I concur completely irrelevant, we are talking about the M135i box, as an owner I can offer my experience albeit 3k miles worth, but as its a newish model [available since last October] I don't think there are many examples of it with upwards of even 10k miles, do you ?
Anyways I see your bid of 107k and raise it with my UKDM Prelude VTEC with 125k on original gearbox/clutch

Oh I'm not, it's just something I see said very often yet every technical article by anyone that knows anything about building engines says that a new engine should be run in as hard as possible as this is the time when the piston rings seal to the bore. Of course by the time the car is delivered from the factory it will have some miles on it.
Running in to me is allowing the new brakes, clutch, gearbox etc time to bed in before hammering it.

So do you suggest then that the designer and manufacturer of the engine does not, therefore, know anything about building engines?

All I said is that every technical article on it by anyone who knows anything about engines suggest that it should engines should be run in as hard as possible.
Whether BMW state the 4k limit to protect other parts of the car, such as the gearbox, clutch or whatever, I don't know.

Good cylinder fill and not constant load helps bed the rings.... Like you are trying to say. But if you have identified the cylinder to ring interface is still bedding in why would you rape those high spots by overspreaeding the engine and glazing sections of the piston ring you were just championing to get seated against the piston nicely?

Except those who design engines, it would seem?
After owning a few BMW's over the years, I can honestly say the build quality of my current E90 isnt as good as past models, particularly the interior quality.
That said the E90 doesnt suffer from the rust issues that are common on the E46, and an equivalent model is quicker and handles slightly better IMO.

Many of them don't have a newer engine, the M47 was carried over from the E46 for about half of the E90's production life.

Fox is correct, the earlier E90 320d has the M47 engine and similar fuel consumption as the E46. The E90 with the same engine is still a little quicker though, half a second to 60 on paper, and handles a little better.
