North Korea threatens US with a pre-emptive nuclear strike.

(CNN) -- The Pentagon's intelligence arm has assessed with "moderate confidence" that North Korea has the ability to deliver a nuclear weapon with a ballistic missile, though the reliability is believed to be "low."

Disclosed first by a congressman at a hearing on Thursday and then confirmed to CNN by the Defense Department, the assessment by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) is the clearest acknowledgment yet by the United States about potential advances in North Korea's nuclear program.

DIA?

Honestly, America needs to stop it with the agencies.

As for the commitment of their forces in general, i really dont think they will stand. Most of them are only there because it means theres a higher chance of them being fed.

I also think a lot of commentators underestimate the south. Not only are they vastly better equipped, trained and experienced but they are bloody good fighters. They were the troops that the vietnamese would avoid rather than be forced to fight.

Well I can see it going 2 ways...

1) Total blood-bath for South Korean and US troops in Korea, since those north Koreans are mad and brainwashed to hate west from birth, I remember reading somewhere that Russian Spetsnaz visited N.Korean equivalent and they were stunned by how mental they were, most of them were brutally trained since teens and Russians struggled to out-perform them, even the hardened veterans from Chechnya and Afghanistan...
This could be a lie to boost N.Korea but I can see it happening... If you hand-pick children and create mindless killers they will be pretty good at it wont they?

Given the hard conditions that N.Koreans currently live in.. A war would not change their lifestyle dramatically... I mean if their troops are starving, at least they will hope for a chance to steal some NATO ration packs :D:D
Same cant be said about S.Korea... they are used to luxuries and food/water shortages will impact their morale greatly.

2) N.Korean troops and country surrenders quickly, in hope for food and better lifestyle.

But in the end I cant see a war coming out of this in all honesty... North Korea has no oil, China will not allow US puppet state so close to its borders and Seoul would be obblitirated within 30 minutes from N.Korean shell fire.. It would look worse than after nuclear strike. This war is in no-ones interest...

That DIA 'intelligence' smacks of the old WMD Dossier... sensationalist headline with no substance. It has already been denied by the Pentagon.

I agree it wont happen....and the shell fire thing is a myth btw :o

so much to do with north korea is just hot air. i dont believe in the medias take on the whole brainwashing thing. although im sure mickeyfinn can chime in with more personal info on that. ive met north koreans before but not actually in north korea so theyd been exposed to the truth.

the single biggest thing about north korea for me is this..theyve never been tested. none of the soldiers currently in their military has ever seen real combat. sure, theyve trained a lot but thats just training. plus youre talking about the elite special forces and it would have been the very very best of those special forces chosen to play with spetznaz guys. the vast majority of their military is not like that.

there wont be any food/water shortages on the side of the south. and they are used to pretty harsh conditions as they all do about 2 years national service and the conditions arent particularly luxurious. the north koreans are starving and once they come in contact with south korean forces, they will realise what the situation is immediately and surrender or run.

and also the north koreans have been malnourished for decades..the average north korean man is like 3 inches shorter than his south korean brother. the average south korean woman is the same height as the average north korean man :o:o

They respond to a lot of questions with memorized perfect responses but you have to look at the emotion with which they deliver what they say. Most of them didn't seem to believe what they were saying, although a few did (strangely it was mostly older women who were most likely to believe it all).

When things went wrong (broken down trains etc.) they would say that "Now you've got a chance to see what our country is really like" where as in the past the response would be along the lines of "This has never happened before".

Got some of the tour guides drunk as well and they quickly started saying how grim things really are, and they're some of the lucky ones as they make 50EUR a month salary but another 500EUR or so in tips.

I just hope that its the US, who is behind this crisis... Because if its China, we are screwed, they have been seeking for an excuse to wipe out whole world for long... They really dont acknowledge other races or cultures... If you read their "hidden" foreign policies where they expect to capture parts of Russia,Taiwan,Korea, Japan... They will be worse than Nazi Germany with their death-camps. Lets just hope that they are afraid to be abblitirated by nuclear weapons.

Lol. :o

the chinese want it all to stay peaceful...the rest of the world relies on their manufacturing and their loans now

why would they want to destroy all their creditors and put their workforce out of jobs by destroying their export markets.

all the uncertainty hurts them as well which is why they will either step in to slap north korea down or let somebody else do it for them then volunteer for 'peacekeeping' and install their own proxy govt.

the reality now is because russia and china are gradually moving away from their old ideas of communism North Korea has nothing left to bargain with. the cold war politics are getting further apart and they have no hard currency to actually buy anything from china or russia.

South Korea, Taiwan, china, japan, in fact most of the far east All great trading powers now, North Korea could be part of it they wanted to
