Everyday Sexism

I, for one, hate how husbands/fathers are always depicted as blithering idiots in adverts, with the wife/mother being some smart-arse.

I get that the target demographic for these ads are women, but you don't see masculists crying about it. :p

It would be interesting though if a number of us did complain whether it would get pulled - we should give it a try and see if there actually is any equality or whether it is just one way traffic.

Look at the images and look at all the posts.
?
People posting there don't seem to be able to distinguish between sexism and someone just being offensive to a woman.
Isn't making a comment about their appearance sexist then?
Gangs of women tend not to follow a boy around and make rape jokes.

The page just makes a mockery of real sexism issues.
I think it highlights the differences between what we consider sexist and what they consider sexist.

Read through some of that yesterday, was rather shocked by some of it. Not sure how people can roll their eyes and say "Stupid feminists" when many of the tweets on there are about inappropriate behaviour by men towards women in the workplace or in public, even to the point of them being grabbed/touched (which is more a case of sexual assault really).

I followed the feed a while ago. Some of it it completely valid, some of it is just being over sensitive. Someone only being able to complement your looks isn't purely sexist. It's stupid, but women do that too.

Tweets that I think are valid:

Carpet salesman left me with the samples but would return to talk money with my husband.

a guy behind me comments on my butt as I was walking home. His mate said to cut it out b/c 'she could be someone's wife'

"Oh sorry Sir I didn't realise that wine was for you, I thought it was for her... I would have recommended a better one"

was in pub waiting for boyfriend. Man tried to chat me up, I politely rebuffed him. Boyfriend arrived, man called me a ****.

constantly being asked if i want to be a GP (I'm a medical student) so I can "raise a family" WHAT IF I WANT TO BE A SURGEON

Well is making comments about say, a black person's appearance racist?

It depends what is said. However it does seem that a lot of those people claim any comments are sexist.

Gangs of women tend not to follow a boy around and make rape jokes.

Certainly not and I find it s bit embarrassing that anyone thinks that's okay.

That should never be how it works. The bottom line is that sexism is discrimination based on s person's gender solely.

It doesn't really extend to things like one of those examples where some girl overheard some guy saying "nice arse" about her to his friend. She might not have liked it and it might have even made her feel uncomfortable, but it isn't sexist just because she didn't like it.

I agree with then all except the guy commenting on the girl's arse. It's not something I'd personally do as I find it a bit distasteful, but it isn't sexist.

If it's sexist, where do you draw the line? Saying it to her and making a point about it, yes I'd agree.

But saying it to his friend? Doesn't that pretty much rule out any one having that sort of discussion with their friends unless they want to be accused of being sexist?

Last time I checked it's common practice amongst men an women to comment on features they find attractive in the opposite gender.

Just look at the theme that Diet Coke adverts have followed for like the last 20 years.

well if the colour is not relevant to the discussion, then I guess yes. I need an example really to comment.

If she gets that repeatedly (and she will) then she is going to interpret that as men just seeing her body first. Which in a social situation may be OK, but in a workplace, isn't. Which is the setting for a lot of those tweets it seems.

It is awkward as men and women have rules about socialising but expect equality as colleagues. The issue for these women is where it gets blurred.

The second problem is a lot of the way we treat women and the roles we expect them to fill is historical, they have moved on in not wanting to accept this but we haven't quite caught up yet (plus the old roles suited us better :o)

Her issue was the comment that she could be someone's wife, and that this somehow changed her status just because she nominally belonged to a man. Nothing to do with her bum.

You see the problem here? We don't always understand what their problem is because we don't think that way.

Lol some of those quotes are classic.

'constantly being asked if i want to be a GP (I'm a medical student) so I can "raise a family" WHAT IF I WANT TO BE A SURGEON'

Give that woman a medal, how can she even get up in the morning knowing she will face such discriminating remarks?

I have curves, I'm a real woman... big is beautiful! But guys should be rugged, strong and have a toned athletic body #everydaysexism

I hate it when a guy stares at me it's creepy, why doesn't he just come and talk to me? #everydaysexism

I hate it when guys come up trying to talk and hit on me... but guys should always make the first move. #everydaysexism

Stop objectifying me because I'm beautiful... but treat me better than other girls because I'm beautiful. #everydaysexism

I want a man whose intelligent but can be silly, strong but shows emotion, independent but can't live without me, treats me like a princess but doesn't put me on a pedestal, tells me he loves me everyday but doesn't overwhelm me. I have an orange tan, fake breasts and the personality of a spoon so I deserve this. #everydaysexism

If you actually lick this post on your monitor you can taste bitterness.

Tastes good man.

I did complain about the blatantly sexist ads during the Olympics (Proctor and Gamble I think) going on about how amazing mums were and completely ignoring the role dads play in children's upbringing. I got a nice condescending reply about how they had 1 advert about shaving.

So I don't think it would do much good - more likely they'd find a way of twisting it so that it was the people complaining being sexist!
