Hi guys,

I'm just wondering, I'm consuming about 80g of carbs each night for my tea (rice, veg etc). Is this far too much for someone wanting to lose weight? (Carbs for the day is around 190g)

I'm injured at the moment so normal routines have altered and I'm not playing football or squash at the moment so I'm not exactly burning those carbs off.

I'm just interested to know if this is too much for tea time?

I get a a bit stuck with what I can have with chicken and rice always fills me and is good tasting at the same time.

Cheers

I wouldn't say 190g is excessive, it only equates to approx 760 cals. Average BMR requirement is what 1800-2000? Should be fine aslong as you're balancing it well with proteins and fats. Your choice of Rice is wise one IMO, it doesn't contain the high levels of gluten and phytates (which can be problematic for some) of the commonly eaten grains.

Actually them carbs wouldn't be a particularly good idea in an evening meal as assuming you will be going sleep a few hours later they will just be mainly stored as fat. If you have to have carbs, complex carbs you want. Brown rice, wholewheat pasta but It depends on your approach. Personally I see much better results from low carb diets.

If it fits in with your daily macros it doesn't matter when you eat it.

2 very good posts.

It all depends on what your overall diet is like and if you're happy with your current state. If you're wanting to drop some weight, you just need to taper off the calories. So if you are injured and still eating the same as when you exercise, and not as active, you may well put on weight - it doesn't matter if it's carbs or not.

As FF says complete rubbish.

Incorrect.

I think that might be enough people now.

If you're going to help, make sure that you give correct advice. You can eat carbs up until 8:23pm and you won't get fat. After this time you can only have Vogel's linseed bread because this is a double++ complex carb.

If you're going to toast it (+5g carbs), then do it like this to avoid insulinz:

Yeah I've reduced what I eat quite considerably, I don't necessarily calorie count but I'm eating around 1500-1700 calories a day now. I'm eating a large variety of protein now and good fats. I've cut out the fizzy drinks and chocolate completely.

I'm 6'3 and just over 16 stone, I'm wanting to shift a stone as my first target then go on from there.

Thanks for the helpful posts.

Sounds like you have cleaned up your diet considerably - but I would perhaps check that 1500-1700 isn't too low given your build.

Try this: http://iifym.com/tdee-calculator/

I reckon it will say eat more, which is probably no bad thing! :D

Yeah, I expect that too, the thing is I'm not really hungry or wanting more!

I have a relatively small breakfast (bran flakes) and then I'm fine until lunch when I have a can of tuna/sweetcorn/cucumber and also a banana, satsuma and an alpen bar, then again I'm fine waiting until tea.

I can't win :D

A snack of cheese on toast always goes down well! :p

:D

Joking aside, there really is no evidence linking carbs in the evening with fat accumulation. If anything the insulin spike you get + the GH release is beneficial.

I find a heavy carby meal makes me sleepy anyway :)

Weighed myself after a heavy binge eating session on Monday morning, weighed myself today, put 1lb on! No wonder people give in :D

I usually weigh myself weekly anyway but I saw the scales, I was curious, now I'm unhappy :(

I know, patience, patience :)

If you are weighing yourself, you need to ensure that the conditions are the same each time:

- Need the loo?
- Morning / night
- Naked? Other clothes on?
- etc etc

Don't worry about the 1lb - if you're eating at an appropriate deficit the weight will come off.

Do yourself a favour. Throw the scales in the bin.
