Even though it looks unlikely I do hope you manage to resolve this with them. 

Pretty disgraceful response tbh - Steam is becoming a victim of its own success. Customer support always has been extremely poor and it is only getting worse it would seem.

i don't see the problem tbh.....you were warned previously about the trades...and yet you still went ahead and traded....herpa derpa???
I'd personally start trying to get some media attention to this. The lack of communication coming out of Valve is truly astonishing.
I remember playing SWG years ago - all items had a unique identifier, if for some reason it disappeared from your inventory as was likely to happen frequently, a GM would easily be able to find the item(s), verify its location (ensure it hadn't been traded) and return the item. This also prevented scamming to a certain degree if you were lucky enough to SS prior to the scam - anyway, my point is;
Does Steam not have such a function, albeit hidden from the user, that could be employed to ascertain the path items have taken. Item History if you will?
Best of luck getting it sorted, I'd hate to lose even my limited collection of games/items over something that wasn't entirely my own fault.
