4K gaming likely to be doable in 2013?

it's horses for courses, i'm on about 55'' 4k OLED... No the games i'm talking about are FC3, CRYSIS 2, Bioshock infinity, they still look junk close up....DOOM 3 is just an example and a good one too..... because Crysis will look as bad as this in 8 years time as well.

modern games aren't detailed well enough for 4k tv and i dont understand how you lot dont realise this, because if you think Crysis 3 looks great, then you need a reality check, parts of it look flipping awfall, no better than 6 years ago !!!!

I think you need to game on a 27" or under monitor. When I game on my monitors, FC3 looks sweet. Tomb Raider is simply stunning. Bioshock Infinite does look a little old and this shows with how little horse power is needed but modern games in general (AAA titles) are seriously good looking. Check out Crysis 3 when you first come out into the open and then say they look junk...

I don't knock anyone for how they wish to play but you can't compare a TV to a monitor. AndyBird is spot on with the PPI argument and you sit 3 feet away from your TV and it will look awful.

but what i dont understand is :-

is the 7990 ok for 4k OLED with regards to the HDMI, my guess is that it's better to wait for the 8000 series, because this OLED tech wasn't an issue last year and the 7990 is last years card.

none of this might matter because OLED TV is still 2 years off, so in 2 years my 7970 will be history anyway, i guess it just depends if i'm stupid enough to buy an OLED next year !!!!

finally, they're fooling around with 8K TV as well, called ``supervision``, but i expect this is for super sized tvs only

the fact that you seem to think that 4K and OLED are one and the same thing says pretty much everything about what you do and don't understand

7*** series cards have HDMI 1.4, which CAN do 4K, but only at 24hz / 24fps
which is ok for bluray, but not for gaming and not for 48fps movies which are starting to be released now too

HDMI 2.0 isn't yet released, but is supposed to support 4K @ 60hz
or Display Port 1.2 supports it now, but so far the only DP1.2 4K displays have been too expensive for many people to consider buying one, which is set to change in the next few months

many of the 4K devices out now support multi-DVI / multi-HDMI to get around this, however both nvidia and AMD cards seem to have issues with supporting 2 or 4 connections, rather than the more traditional 3 cable / 3 monitor

this might just be a case of a driver update... but on the other hand it might not

I really don't know why you keep talking about OLED, no one else here has even mentioned OLED, we are talking about 4K displays for gaming, not TV's

Consoles do support 1080p, and games are technically displayed in 1080p. At 1080p on a console you get HD Menus, HD Hud and sometimes HD Backdrops, but all foreground textures tend to be 720p or lower scaled up.

So it is and isnt a trick. Its the same with a lot of PC games, not all textures are HD, only the ones you tend to see close up, e.g. Guns, Players arms if FPS, HUD etc.

Some walls in games are HD too, but most things like objects are lower res as you do not sit there and stare at them.

i agree with the ppi argument, i have a 30" dell and have had this for about 7 years now, i can tell the difference from this and a 1080p, people playing consoles do generally sit 8-9 foot away from tv while sat on their sofa, whereas pc gamers usually sit 2-3 foot away, i personally sit around 2 foot away, games do look a lot better on the pc and they do look better with a higher res,

then there was a mention of 55" 4k oled, well this isnt really a resolution increase because you have twice the size of tv/monitor ( compared to my 30" monitor ) with double the pixels, so roughly the same ppi, where you wil notice the bigger difference is with a 30" 4k monitor, this is what im waiting for, and the difference can only be better,

oh as for pc gaming being dead by the time 4k is the norm is a bit of a daft comment, pc gaming is probaly bigger than console gaming, some games are still massive on the pc, look at counterstrike on the pc, it was the most played fps game for about 10 years running, take a look at bf3 on the console and how many servers/ players are on and then look at the pc version, massive difference in online players. there are more casual gamers on consoles,

Thats insane .... console gaming hugely outnumbers pc gaming by a very large amount.
If your going by numbers like you quoted try Black Ops 2.
PC average online 50,000 (if that)
PS3 online 500,000
Xbox over a million.

PC has many more hardcore communities which are dedicated to games but I seriously doubt there are more PC gamers. I don't recall there having been any games which were released on all three platforms where the PC sales have been greater than that of the PS3 or Xbox 360 either.

if you want to get in to a numbers game just look at mmo's. there's somewhere around 20-22 million active paying subs on mmo's. then you can go and count the fps crowd and stratergy guys id say pc gaming is in good health and will remain so for many years to come.

dont forget the next play station and xbox are pc based machines so cross platforming should be a lot better than it has been. as for the top end of the gfx market in games, epic have said the ps4 demo on the unreal 4 engine test runs at a lower setting that the pc version which is run on a gtx680, they do admit they have to tweak the ps4 version more yet to ring out more performance but give it 12 months and both nvidia and amd/ati will have new chipsets out that will be even more advance.

il be honest i was looking at a ps4 but after gaming using my pc hooked up to my old 720p/1080I plasma and i may very well just buy a new gfx card and a new 50-55 inch panel and forget the ps4 until something i really want to play turns up on it.

and dont forget more and more companies are now making games that you can play on a big screen which actually looks ok for a change, take steams big picture for example.

Well done Andy. I was looking for the PCWorld one. PC games of late have been rocketing. Could be to do with the PS3 and Xbox GFX looking tired and so the more than average gamer wants better quality and heads for a PC (Look at the GH section and see how many are turning from consoles to PC's just on this forum, to get an indication of that).

Not sure if it will last with the release of the next gen consoles but here is hoping.

at most I can see these figures equalise a bit, but I can't see them reversing

I would even go as far as guessing that nvidia are preparing for a fight against consoles by equipping their soon to be released cards with 4 and 5GB of VRAM

http://www.trustedreviews.com/panasonic-4k-oled-tv_TV_review

4k and OLED are together (on this tv that is) this is the tv that i'm interested in, that is if it drops in price far enough, in fact many other OLEDs will be 4K as well.....do you understand now ;)

yes i didn't think that the 7990 would be up to it....i'm not interested in anything less than 50 or 60Hz

so now i'll have to start researching the next gen cards, i agree with you about gaming via a monitor, but i must admit that my new Panny plasma looks brilliant for gaming, games to be honest look fine, it's just things that you see inside rooms/ offices etc, i'm only really being super fussy.

OLED is a type of panel like led, plasma and even tft, not a screen resolution standard.

oh yes i know, it's 1080p, but the OLED I want, (it has to be Panasonic) is 4K as well.

but if Panasonic release a cheaper OLED with only 1080p, then i'm still interested, because it's OLED that i'm after, rather than just 4K LED/Plasma.

mind you, a top end 4K Panny plasma will be interesting as well

bloody hell you've updated a long way ... twin Titans in your sig !!!!!!

i cant do this because i'm only on 1080p, but next time i'm deffo after a dual card only.......it's a shame, because the 7990 would be perfect, except for this 4k issue

Pop another 7970 in? The Asrock board will work with X8 X8 nicely.

7970's won't do 4K over HDMI (1.4) either

what we don't know yet, is if someone will do a Display Port 1.2 (which all current gen cards do have) to HDMI 2.0 active adapter, which would solve Mal's issue when HDMI 2.0 TV's come out

I say solve Mal's issue, one of them at least

but then if Mal is insisting on OLED instead of / as well as 4K then he's in for a much longer wait anyway

Ahhhh I thought the DP was good enough? (2 of them that is)

Ahhhh I thought the DP was good enough? (2 of them that is)

most of the devices released so far don't have DP, only DVI / HDMI
you then need to use 2 - 4 of them to get the picture up, which AMD and Nvidia cards don't like terribly well right now

the only device I know of due for release imminently is the Sharp 4K monitor, which does have DP 1.2 (single cable needed for 4K @ 60hz), but it is looking like it will still be £3k+ and it's 32"... personally I'd like something in the 36-42" range really

HDMI 2.0 isn't even a properly agreed standard yet, so transmitters/receivers are still a ways off
