Florida

Try not to accidentently drive in to a ghetto. if you do, don't stop at any stop signs or lights just keep driving until you are out of the death zone. Dont worry the cops will understand what you are doing (if your white and dont look like your buying drugs).

Remember it's 55 mph limits , cops are armed .. And keen !
Avoid getting lost off the beat track , ie getto hell ..
Sat nav is god send !
Fuel is cheap as chips .. $20 will fill ya tank of most family ish cars ..
Watch ya self @ junctions , easy to end up on wrong side of road ;) , which the right side for us ... Say no more .
An it's bloody clammy in aug .. Air con is a must .

? Speed limit varies, on the highways its typically 70mph.

Fuel is around $3.60 a gallon and as an average most cars take around 18 gallons to fill. Most cars give you around 25-30mpg on the highway.

There's no such thing as a car WITHOUT aircon in Florida.

We didn't take a sat nav and the guys at Enterprise or whoever rented us a car tried to scare us into taking a Sat Nav at $9 a day, saying things like 'this is America you don't want to end up in the wrong place' ' do you know where the the bad parts are?' etc

Sort a Sat Nav out before if it's not built in

Unless you have a satnav with US mapping I wouldnt go out of your way to buy one specially, I found it one of the easiest places to navigate due to the block layout of the towns and cities. If you have to drive any sort of distance just make sure you get on the freeway that goes in the right direction and get off at the correct exit.

Of course this is just my opinion but If you can drive in the UK without getting lost constantly then driving in the US will be a breeze.

On a basic package for 7 days = £199 with free cancellation up to 48hrs before collection and free amendments.

Price inc: Unlimited mileage, Insurance (Collision Damage Waiver, Theft Protection, 3rd Party Liability, Supplementary Liability Insurance & Uninsured Motorist Protection ), Local Taxes, Airport Surcharge, Premium location fee and Homeland Security Fee

that's a good price btw ...

ya careful with the drinking and driving ... not like Britain here ;)

You know what i would do... Just go into your any Walmart, Target or Bestbuy and buy a satnav for $99. There's plenty of them at that price. Otherwise the rental company will charge you $15 per day.. Out here i use GPS MotionX drive on my iPhone, but with your cell being from the UK, i don't know how the data charges would rack up. I'm not sure if it purely relies on GPS or uses data too. Something worth investigating.

I know FL inside out, any questions, just let me know.

Or just buy a US sim card with a data allowance for <$50 and use google nav.

Good point. Straighttalk should work on a GSM iPhone. That's $45 per month unlimited voice, text and data. It's not LTE though, just 3G.

The phone has to be GSM, it doesn't work with CDMA. (not even sure if CDMA even exists in the UK ? )

There is really only 4 cellphone providers in the US: Sprint, ATT and Verizon and Tmobile. All the other brands are just sub-providers of those 4.

I think Sprint (and it's sub-providers) is the only one that uses CDMA.

The best deal I can see for a standard pre pay data plan is with AT&T, $30/3GB, $50/5GB.

This is 4G inclusive and also includes access to AT&T Wifi hotspots.

Another member here found a $25/5GB 4G plan with AT&T, but it requires an Ipad cellular and an American credit card to activate (he got round that with a pre pay visa card sourced locally).

Make sure you stick to the speed limits as they will pick on hire cars and make sure you don't forget which side you need to be driving on. and the cross roads with no lights means first there goes first. Also, police will drive everywhere and anywhere. When I went last, a police car cut us up and drove over a grass embankment and down the wrong side of the motorway to get to a fire. Scary stuff.

They don't pick on hire cars - firstly it's not easy to pick a hire car out like that anyway, secondly hire cars are used far more by business travellers and American citizens than by easy-picking tourists anyway, so to do so would be nonsensical.

Nope, only AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM.

Sprint, Verizon, MetroPCS, US Cellular and Cricket use CDMA.

Only Sprint and VZ have iPhone's made especially for their network.

So don't go bagging a Sprint or VZ iPhone out in the US, cos it'll be as good as an iTouch back in the UK.

StraightTALK is going to be the best for what the OP is trying to do. That works off the AT&T network.
