F12 M6 & M135i Drive

Happy to be proven wrong, but that won't happen will it as nobody is going to get 40mpg on a motorway journey in a M135 without being on a mission to do so.

Setting the cruise to the maximum permissable speed on a Motorway and then sitting back with the music on doesn't seem like much of a 'mission' to me.

But is 40mpg possible on a cruise with the windows down, thus affecting the drag? Discuss

(joking!!!!!!!!)

Can the thread get back to how uber both the cars in the topic actually are? Rather than a mpg discussion?

Just to note, in my 335i I can hit high 30's on motorway cruise, so I see no reason at all why the M135 can't do the same or better.

I need to find my Gmeter but i fear it has been borrowed and never returned :(

Bloke on pistonheads has been using his datalogic on his wife's M135i and has been hitting 0-60 times of just over 4.2 which i think is bonkers!!

Wowzers! i really want one of these.

I need a better job...

Quoted from Pistonheads ... although not sure where i got the data logic bit from (my mind is full of boring work stuff, this is my excuse)

I must be getting old - I've got both on my driveway and think the M3, while a good 'occasion' car (and I bloody love it), isn't leagues above the M135i that sits next to it. I have no problems getting plenty of drama out of either. The only thing I can't do as well in the Mlite (and tbh I'm not a mega driver) is slide it round a roundabout as easily and as controlled - it seems a bit snappier - MDM mode is just perfect for n00bs like me, so the M3 wins that hands down.

HOWEVER, when all's said and done, I spend probably 0.02% of my time sideways on roundabouts, the rest of the time on the motorways and ferrying kids around, so I can do that in the *faster* M135i. I've data logged both via OBC, and I can't get near the 4.229 I got out of the M135i 0-60 in my M3 (auto vs. manual).

Anyone who says hustling an M135i round a set of twisties isn't a good laugh hasn't driven one properly. It's just a good, (very) quick, honest drive, seats 5, does the shopping/tip trips, and does 40mpg.

The more I read, the more I want. A genuine bargain that almost seems too good to be true.

I hope it inspires the other manufactures to create performance bargains, providing the M135i sells well (which I can’t see why it wouldn’t).

Ha, very funny!

Even more staggering than the lofty mpg claims is the fact that people appear to rate speed over looks! It's bloody ugly! :o

(Well apart from the Estoril blue of course :))

I still can't get over how fast it goes. I've just got back in from a drive and the sheer pace it goes from 30mph to 70mph without even trying is absolutely bonkers. I'm not sure the official 0-62 time of 4.9 seconds is a fair figure to judge the car by.

So many people say the same about the cars looks but i like it ... Maybe im just weird

All the sheep saying it's ugly are following the crowd and basing their opinion on either photos or because they've seen the bog standard F2x 1 series which are becoming quite common and do indeed look ugly.

The M135i looks as awesome as any other hot hatch IMO. In fact passing all the other inferior hot hatches since owning it makes me even more happy I'm driving something a bit more subtle and sophisticated.

It's a head turner however perhaps it's the 6 cylinder engine though because to the average pedestrian who knows nothing about cars, the intoxicating noise it makes is just not something you would expect from a 'generic looking' hatch.

Indeed. Eco Pro mode with cruise control is fantastic on the motorway. It gets upset with me if I go above a certain cruising speed but I think that's configurable. Still learning the car :D

Even more bonkers is that in the not too distant future these are going to be an uber second hand bargain which will inevitably result in some unreputable citizens being in control of such powerful machines :p

I think they will hold their value very well actually. A bargain brand new, yes, but I don't think they will prove to be a bargain on the second hand market. Only time will tell!

No, as much as i want one of these, it is not a very good looking car.

Yes, acceleration throughout the entire range must be pretty tasty - they definitely got that right!

Autocar:

"Want to go from 30mph to 70mph using only third gear? It’ll take just 4.1sec"

"Do we think it’s a disappointment that it isn’t naturally aspirated, with the same whip-crack response as a true M engine?"

"There’s only a little turbo lag at low revs, and you have to search for it."

On the looks front - it's still one of the worst looking hatches about. Sure it's better than a bog standard 1 series (which my g/f's mum has, and it's hideous inside and out) but it's still not as good as it should be.

The front is nearly passable (in the usual BMW snouty kinda way) but from the bonnet back, it's all a bit awkward. They've done a good bit of work to improve the situation, especially the excellent combo of Estoril blue, gunmetal alloys and blue calipers, but that doesn't disguise the shape of course. Reminds me a little of an old Honda Civic breadvan actually!

Autocar's road tester "It's not exactly a pretty car, is it?" :p

I think it's a safe bet to say that all of the below are prettier hatches:

Renault Mégane Renaultsport

Ford Focus ST

Volkswagen Scirocco R

Vauxhall Astra VXR

Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG

To avoid being overly negative - Yes, I would definitely have one for the engine and build quality, IF I liked it to look at, but sadly I do not (and I wouldn't buy a car I wasn't happy to look at!).
