Samsung 840 v 830

And unraring large files on the non pro will be fast, anway.

Well, as long as it's the 250GB version, I believe the 120GB has a slower write speed which may mean waiting a little longer !

I suppose if you are "unraring" lots of large files on a regular basis, then the higher write speed and longer "writes" lifetime might come into play.

What I do notice is that the price of the 840 is now quite a lot less than the 830 was.

Really? The very basic 840 120GB with 130MB/s is £89.99. I paid a giveaway price of £75 in October for the 830 128GB 320MB/s write speed.

I paid £109 for an 840 250GB on 1st Jan.

It is perfectly possible to pay a similar price today.

I seem to remember 256GB of 830 costing a fair bit more than that.

OK ~250MB/s write speed is terrible ( ;) ) on the 840, but if you can live with that, then it is hardly a bad drive. And ~£110 - £130 for 250GB of > 500MB/s read speed, and very good IOPS is not too shabby. I understand that the "IOPS" figure is the one that makes a real world difference to how an SSD actually appears to perform.

Oh, and it's a Samsung, so reliability and after sales should be OK.

Was pondering over wether to go for the pro or the standard 840, the high read speed of the pro is very attractive, but i couldnt justify the extra money for it so went with the 250gb standard model. Tbh, as ive been running a 5400 rpm laptop drive lately for os, any ssd will be a vast improvement. Really missed not having one after my vertex 2e went pop.

Ordered now.

Wise move, IMHO.

OK, the non pro uses "cheap" memory, and the write speed is lower (but hardly slow !). However, it's made by Samsung, has a 3 year warranty, and is a fair bit cheaper than the pro version. The £60(ish) saving is hardly insignificant, and if indeed, you do "wear out" the TLC memory (unlikely if you are a "normal" home user), you'll probably be looking to upgrade to a 1TB+ SSD anyway.

I might sound like I'm trying to justify buying one myself, but I'm fairly careful where I spend my money, and indeed my customer's money. The 840 250GB is the SSD that I recommend to most of my customers, and I`ve installed half a dozen in the past month or so.

Time will tell if the non pro versions are reliable, but so far I haven't heard of any reports of many failures. With any new SSD models, we're always "in the dark" anyway as far as reliability goes. We can only consider the past reliability of the manufacturer's products, and their after sales service. I believe that Samsung are not bad on either count.

Im sticking with the 840 pro 120gb I think

If the 128gb capacity is enough, then the choice between pro and no pro is a lot easier.

What you might want to consider is that for not a lot more (less than £20, with the current cashback offer, I think) you can have virtually double the capacity and hardly any difference in real world performance.

One rule of storage capacity - "enough" often becomes "not enough".

The Capacity to £ to Performance ratio of the 840 250gb makes it hard to ignore.

With the current Cashback deal, the 250GB non pro is only about £10 more. Double the capacity for an extra tenner ?

I suppose if there's no way you'll ever need the extra capacity, then it's a tenner saved and you have faster write speeds and an extra 2 years warranty.
