I have taken the plunge and will be having my very first gym experience on Wednesday with a personal trainer to guide me along the way for the first few occasions. I'll make a thread later about this.

He advised me to go to Sports Direct and get some 'training shoes' with 'neutral support' or 'high support'.

Can anyone provide any advice with regards to brands and what to look for? I don't really want to spend over £50 and i have been looking at some of the Nikes and they seem pretty good.

I have asked him as well but whilst he is getting back to me, i thought i'd ask you lot. :)

Depends on what your doing if your going to focus on weight lifting you want a flat firm sole for stability when lifting heavy. If your going to do a lot of running then it depends on how you run. If your a heel striker you want lots of padding if your a mid foot striker go for a more flatter flexible sole and if your a toe striker find one of the "barefoot" trainers like the vibram 5 fingers

Don't get anything with a compressible sole. I use the the adipower weighlift for squats and barefoot for deadlifts and all other exercises. If your gym is anything like the sissy gym (virgin active) I used to go to they won't allow you to go barefoot so get some deadlift slippers or converse.

I got told off yesterday for taking my shoes off when squatting :(
A PT made a point of coming over from the other side of the gym to tell me "due to health and safety reasons" i had to put them back on!

Going to have to look at getting some new ones myself. Or tell him to pull his head out of his ****

Next time ask what health and safety reasons.

Tbh a lot of people shouldn't squat or pull bare feet, especially not a normal chain gym.

Tell him to do one or you'll cancel your membership! Ridicules thinking a pair of trainers are going to make a difference if you drop a heavy object on your feet.

Makes a difference when you kick a weight though. I can assure you :(:p

Espadrilles or deck shoes - I always think it's sooo cool when I see young lads in the gym wearing either. I mean, it's not about the exercise right, it's about how cool you look!?
