Should Sky charge extra for HD?

So pretty much all TVs of a certain size these days are HD (1080p) displays. HD has become the standard, even if a lot of people still have SD in their homes.

Yet Sky charge over £120 a year for the privilege of watching HD broadcasts - extra on top of your channel subscription. Even then Sky's HD is 1080i or 720p, compared to 1080p recently provided by Freeview (source: google).

Now I know Sky is a business and we should all throw our money at them because greed is good (this is GD, most of you are Tories :p), but at what point should Sky just drop the HD charge and let us all move with the times?

P.S. I still have SD because I'm not living on benefits ;)

HD should be standard as far as broadcasts go imo. We're probably likely to have 4K HDTV's waiting on 720p content to become standard at this rate :p

Sky have always been a rip-off company providing awful TV programming at an over inflated cost, considering that, it seems moot to complain about one extra surcharge. The future of TV is TVIP anyway, compared to that SKY is antiquated.

What rubbish, discovery make some of the best documentaries going.

Whilst a lot of the programming is indeed awful, I sometimes find entertaining things to watch on Nat Geo, Discovery, Eden, etc. Sometimes.

Yes 100%. You pay the money to receive the channels from sky, then they charge you more for the privilege of watching them in the way they were intended to be watched. Its not like it costs Sky any extra to provide them. (at least I assume this is the case, Virgin manage to do it for free at least)

Its also nice to know that new customers only pay £5 per month for HD, whereas existing customers pay £10.

I cant remember the last time I saw a documentary on the Discovery channel. Just seems to be silly American shows about peoples doing weird jobs with a bit of "drama" added. Usually in the form of rednecks arguing over nothing.

Can charge what they like, whilst they have a monopoly, why they aren't forced to sale all channels to virgin, I can't understand. Other sectors with such few competitors and such a big monopoly have anti monopoly rulings.

I just really hope netflix continues to succeed and continues to make its own tv shows, just like amazon is. The trouble is, it has a good chance of becoming fragmented and wrecking it, as you'll have to subscribe to like 6 different services.

WWII in colour, for me discovery is worth it for wheeler dealers, mythbusters, gold rush and moonshiners.

That's before we start to talk about how great the F1 coverage has been IMHO.

Then we have sky Atlantic and game of thrones.

F1 is great, main reason for ditching virgin.
I like the discovery channels. Yeah there is loads of crap, but there is some interesting tv and plenty of good background tv.
Aircraft conferdential is amazing.

It seems the good stuff has moved to the other discovery channels like Eden, or national geo.

Don't get me wrong in not complaining about the content of other channels, its the reason I subscribe after all. I'm merely saying that Discovery is a shell if what it once was, it used to be constant interesting docs, now its 95% reality shows and 5% good content. My opinion of course but id much rather have it back the way it was.

This!

I pay for BBC yet I hardly watch anything, Top Gear is about the only thing I watch and we only get 6 episodes a year or something!

TV is one thing I would love to do pay as you go.
I don't wont to subsidise rubbish and I'm sure my bill would be a lot cheaper.

It should be standard. I had a gripe about this a year ago when I was with Virgin and had to pay to get HD channels with Virgin and pay another extra £10 to get Sky Sports in HD. A joke really.
