Me vs The Mrs. Range Rover 4.2 SC vs Lexus RX350.

Dont go for a RRSport, although they look OK from the outside, they are similar to a Disco on the inside :(

Yeah, I drove a SC one when I had my FFRR in for repairs (lol), wasn't impressed by the cheapo plastics etc, but you couldn't ever call it a bad car. Just not as good as the full size. For me, It would come down to what's available for the budget.. The missus is after an Evoque, but I will try to widen the brief a bit :)

Oh bad car certainly not, they are absolutely excellent, just not as good as an L322 (not many cars are!) :)

BMW X5s seem to hold their value really, really well and for my budget I'd be looking at an older model that's based on the E39. Not a bad thing per se, but we're talking a car that's running on a design from 1996.

A budget of £16-£17k will easily see you sat in an E70 X5. There are 3.0d and 4.8 petrols available for that sort of cash.

Would I take one over an RR SC?. I'm not sure. The E70 is a very accomplished bit of kit though.

E70 is going to be fairly ropey for £16k. They are not really that cheap yet for examples you'd actually want to buy.

I dunno. A quick scan on AT shows many £16-£18k examples with FBMWSH, some with 1 owner which 'look' to be in very good order, some with fairly leggy miles on them, some with low to average mileage covered. Of course that's all subjective unless you actually go and view any in the flesh and investigate further but as far as I can see there are some examples out there available just now which look like worthwhile viewing. No E70 AUC's (apart from a couple just over the £18k mark) but then at this price point you wouldn't really expect there to be that many.

Do you live in the countryside?

If so, buy a range rover.

If not, don't buy one.

Absolutely sick of the amount of retards driving these - it's usually tiny women who want to feel empowered driving their big car or moronic blokes who need a sport so that they can drag race and bully other drivers off the road.

Oh and it's usually range rovers and the like I see parked in ridiculously unsociable ways (ie. on the corners approaching road abouts! Duh!

none of the above i would get the Volvo XC90 4.4 V8 a few tweaks and bolt on`s and your looking at a 650 bhp monster.

I dont think I ever spent more than 2k per year on mine, unless you are unlucky of course and need tires, brakes and suspension done at the same time :)

Especially if you are not visiting the dealer and creatively sourcing your spares.

lashout : I thought of it to, but I guess they are only available as LHD imports in the UK? G55 would be another thought, but after having a look and seeing a LHD 2004 for 37 k.. I guess not.

From reading OP it would have to be RR. You won't enjoy the Lexus from what you said so what is the point?

Yea, you can get official RHD ones here. Quite a few around, from about £12k up (random example above). Less costly 'normal' V8 Grands are also available. Not driven one but heard a fair amount of positive stuff. Good fun too.

Well, I looked at a few Rangies yesterday and most were ropey with sellers trying to show me all the gadgets.
It seems at this end of the market, most get bought by people who don't care about the condition of the car and are more interested in the fact that it's a Rangie over anything else.

I also popped in to my local Lexus dealer and tried a 400H. Very nice I must say. Comfortable and quiet.

I think I'm probably going to go with an RX now. Yes, it's dull but at the moment I still have my S2000 and my bike for fun. The car kind of needs to be reliable. I don't want my mrs stranded at the side of the road while heavily pregnant.

Actually the Range Rover excels in a city environment, they are perfect city cars with silky smooth automatics, excellent armchair seating and a fantastic road view. Driving around London in one is like driving around in your own little living room on wheels.

Nooo :(

OK, Rangie is still on the cards. Mrs and I were talking last night and she really likes them due to the road presence and tall driving position.
I'm not in any great hurry to buy so I shall hang around and see what comes up.

Hopefully fuel prices will go up again soon and that will bring the 4.2SC prices crashing down again.
