Lauryn Hill jailed for tax evasion

I wish I could take the same stance and not pay my tax because of slavery??

If you wish to try then go ahead, I suspect that it will be afforded the same level of respect as her using it as a defence was.

As for Lauryn Hill - great singer but some rather dubious views. However I've never been of the opinion that you cannot separate the art from the artist as a person so I'll still continue to enjoy the songs.

I dunno, some of the more extreme elements here call tax "legalised theft", and slavery from that era was essentially legalised theft of freedom, so maybe from that view she has a point.

If she's got a point then it applies to everyone... we're pretty much all descended from slaves and royalty and everything else in between....

Any data to support this assertion. And are you including people with life-long debilitating illnesses/disabilities in that figure?

So if you had an accident tomorrow and were left brain damaged, you saved enough to cover you for the rest of your life including the costs of carers, home adjustments etc?

I didn't say there should be no social care provision, the same as I except the majority of other items on that list should be partially/compleatly funded through taxation. I use the NHS, I was state educated, the police might have found my wallet once etc.

The breakdown for the UK welfare bill 2011/12 is here

Job seekers and other short term support is trivial.

i don't care how they spend it. Argument is not about them not spending it well enough or spending it on the wrong thing. The argument is that i want to keep all the money from my salary.

Why does the US government care about 1 million for gods sakes they are $14 trillion in debt, what difference is 1 million going to make any way. They would still spend the same amount whether they got the 1 mil or not. not like some poor people are going starving cause she wanted to keep her hard earned money.

So the law applies to everyone eles but her?

Yes, that works. It makes perfect sense.

I think for a lot of people, loosing a vast majority of that which they work for is a bitter pill to swallow. Many will attribute this to the social cost of looking after an ever increasing immigration intake hence many people's decision to vote ukip.

The fact remains that taxation is pretty horrible when you look at it. This combined with the fact that pensions are crap and wages (especially in stinky London) are way too low, only serves to make the hard working folk of this country pretty sodding ****ed off. I'm one of them.

Then bring in the immigrants, make any reference to race a criminal offence, tax the crap out of the hardest working and highest earning, make the young utterly redundant financially, tax the crap out of everything thats left and sit back and blame the Germans.

or hire a decent accountant maybe..........

Being made to pay something you have absolutely no choice over is a form of control. Slavery is pushing it a bit though. I suppose she could always move to Monaco like all the F1 drivers do

If she doesn't like america she has the money to leave, they've provided her with that..

Not her talent but her wealth, their will be lots of amazing singers in Africa right now but they don't make anything from singing, obvious point im making is she is black, if she lived in Africa, she would have a poor life most probably, but lives in america and probably has an amazing life yet still feels the need to tell everyone how awful it is.

Its annoying how racist america still is, both sides are as bad as each other.

No one is forced to pay it though. Don't want to pay income tax? Don't get a job, simples.

Telling someone they have to do something is a form of control, whatever twist you put on it.

Whether you say "don't get a job to avoid paying me tax" or "pay me 50% of everything you make." It's all a form of control.

Like forcing people to pay a TV license. That's even more pathetic

I don't live in the UK any more and I pay no income tax, so my opinion is some what jaded.

However regarding the TV thing... It's absolutely ridiculous and if you can't see why you are a little bit blind.

BBC have no right to say you should pay them money because you have a TV and watch ITV or Channel 4... Why can't I own a TV and just watch other channels without having to pay a license fee? Pretty sure the UK is one of the only countries in World to force people to pay a fee like they do.

Also, the notion that the license people have the personal details of millions upon millions of "subscribers" is a little daunting. They know your name, address, credit card info, pretty much everything. Who gave these people so much power?

The money "from your salary" is (a) only possible because of the taxes paid by all and (b) only yours because the state is willing to protect your property rights. Without taxation you would neither earn the money or be able to keep it from anyone else who wishes to take it from you. It's not "being stolen" from you; you not wanting to pay taxes is nothing more or less than you wanting to be a parasite living off other people's work.

How is it there are countries with 0% income tax rate then who function perfectly fine?

Name a country without taxation*, and we'll look at why they're (a) a special case in a manner that doesn't apply to the UK and (b) don't actually function "perfectly fine"?

There are no countries remotely comparable to the UK that are successful without taxation.

* - note that income tax is not the only form of taxation.

A nightclub bouncer telling me I can't wear trainers is a form of control, a bus conductor telling me I must have valid ticket is a form of control.

I don't get your point. Unless you are an anarchist and don't think society should have rules
