Me vs The Mrs. Range Rover 4.2 SC vs Lexus RX350.

Actually the Range Rover excels in a city environment, they are perfect city cars with silky smooth automatics, excellent armchair seating and a fantastic road view. Driving around London in one is like driving around in your own little living room on wheels.

Definitely. Comfy chairs and autobox in a congested town / city environment are ideal. Small "city" cars with flat seats, low powered engines and unpleasant gearboxes are, despite their moniker, pretty horrible.

Only problem is parking the bloody thing :p

the range is a great big ride, however with 100k on the clock it is likely to be a greater liability than the rx350. you could always choose the rx400h.

That SRT8 is pretty special, saw a few (and other high powered SUVs) whilst I was in Canada. Nothing had the presence of my father-in-law's Nissan Armada though, especially with the Superchips' magic... (no wonder we spent $1200 in fuel driving through the Rockies! )

My cousin works for Land Rover and I can be fairly certain that he would strongly advise you against buying a cheap RR. Things WILL go wrong, and they could cost a fortune to put right. I don't know specifics, but if you're interested I'll have a chat with him about it.

Still I'd be thinking....Supercharged V8.......Mmmmmmmngh

Maybe a bit of a left-field idea, and you might not like it because you don't like the Q7, but what about a V10 TDI Touareg? They are superbly comfortable, and (for their size / weight) stupendously quick and they accelerate like you wouldn't believe possible for a car of that size.

Its huge, but I am not sure if that equals presence. Tahoes, Armadas and Sequoias are pretty awful things to drive, or ride in..Its like steering an ocean liner. They are just too big unless you have 5 or 6 kids to carry around :P They look fairly bland aswell.

The thing is, I don't believe this.
Recon gearbox, TC and fitting: £2k ish
Complete suspension refresh (Airbags, struts, compressor): £2k ish again

Parts are cheap for Rangies in comparison with some metal out there.

If I had no idea which end of a spanner to hold then yeah, I totally agree. A total liability. But doing my own maintenance, I don't see it. Certainly no more expensive than a 7-Series.

As a cheap (Sub £15k) proposition, i think it makes sense as at this end of the market I don't care about maintaining LR service history etc. I'd say that a £40k 3 year old one is going to be more of a liability as I'd want to keep that LR history and so would take it to LR to fix.

You do make good points though. I dunno. The RX just leaves me cold. And so does every other SUV out there apart from the Rangie.

I could see myself in a V10 Toureg but the same applies to them as does the Rangie. Poor reliability, but with the Toureg, we're also playing with turbos, DPFs, EGRs and all the other diesel guff that goes along with it.

A SC Rangie is a nice, simple V8 with a simple single scroll SC bolted to the top. I've had the same engine before in the S-Type R I had and it was a good lump.

I was about to post the same thing Rilot. There is nothing too scary on a RR which you will not find on any other (high end) car. We for example will be trading a 7-series against it, an E65 model, which has just as much to go wrong, again, all cheap, if you are handy with recon markets and research.

/predictable rant
People really over egg car running costs, nothing produced for mass market has high costs ime. Even my R230 SL with ABC, hydraulic Vario roof, air controlled locking, etc, which is one of the most complicated "normal" cars around (far more so than a Range Rover) has nothing about it which could cost if you are astute.

I realise that we are speaking relatively here with regards to costs, but judging by your past cars and attitudes towards them, we are on the same page. I wish people would not ever mention running costs for cars as frankly who cares :p
