Lauryn Hill jailed for tax evasion

Yeah exactly that's your problem right there. Statistics cannot tell you everything.

States (and cities) vary vastly in the US... There are places I wouldn't go close to and there are places I'd feel safer than the UK in. You can't just put some "average number" on everything and think it gives a realistic picture of the actual situation.

This is kinda getting off point. If taxes were so effective at reducing murder and other things then the UK would be in a far better place than it is now.

It gives an indication. Or what would be the point in recording them in the first place? Are you honestly suggesting a lower policing budget (per capita) wouldn't be contributing to a higher crime rate?
It's not the only factor, of course. The biggest issue is the inequality between the rich and the poor, and only taxation will address that.

There are a lot of other countries that have similar or less tax rates, with lower murder rates and lower crimes overall.

Since you like statistics and averages though...

Poland for example has 20% less max tax rate and a lower murder rate. Switzerland has virtually no murders and far lower taxes.

Anyway I have to go. Keep paying your taxes and maybe society will become a better place (yeah sure)

Your concentrating so much on income tax. What about duties, VAT, road tax, etc etc?
And, as has been mentioned before, it is not just crime rate (or your obsession with murder rates, do they only matter ) that make up quality of life. How many of these low taxation countries have universal healthcare? Certainly not the US. What is the education system like?

I will say my problem isn't with paying an income tax, it's with paying an excessive one. 10 or 15% is fair in my view, but 50% + all the other taxes you have, meaning you lose close to 70 or 80% of what you make is just totally outrageous and theft on a grand scale. And this is what would happen to me if I lived in the UK, I'd lose 70% of what I made. For what? To pay for other people who want a free ride and crappy politicians? No thanks

Again with the free ride? Cite your sources, or they mean nothing.

I really have to go, but no I never said that. Police are not paid for by income tax, they are paid for by council tax as far as I know.

Wrong for many reasons, but I don't have time to address them. Taxing the rich more and more will just force them elsewhere where they know they won't get ripped off. And why should someone who is successful have to pay more? They worked hard and made smarter decisions, so now they have to pay for the people that didn't?

Exactly. What about them! When you add everything up you are losing close to 70% of every penny you make. You're crazy if that doesn't upset you.

The US has 6 of the 10 top universities in the World.

What about my latest examples of Poland and Switzerland though? Both of which are much closer to home than the US

Are you just trying to troll? Most the World sees the UK as a place to go for a free ride. Why do you think so many people are trying to get in from France?

Search Google for asylum seekers taking advantage of the system. An Afghan woman living in a £1 million home and claiming £3,000 a week in benefits comes to mind (yeah that actually happened)

It is not silly at all, taxation pays for policing does it not? The UK is by no means perfect, but for the majority the quality of life is a fair whack better than the US.

nah... quality of life is likely better for most in the USA... its those at the bottom of the pile who are better off in the UK - not having health care, social housing in the form of 'projects'/ghettos etc.. make being poor in the USA a fairly unpleasant prospect. Of course the rich over there tend to be richer and the middle class get much more bang for their buck in terms of the amount of living space/garden etc.. they can afford... general living expenses are a bit lower too.

sounds like you're taking people for the ride..

imo if you make enough to pay 50% tax you're the one taking from people, not the other way round

And bringing murder rates and teenage pregnancy into a discussion about income tax is pretty silly too.

If you want to talk about a good society I would hardly use the UK as an example. Have you ever been out at night in your town or city? It's pretty damn scary

It's not silly if you're talking about using income tax as a means of wealth distribution. There's a strong correlation between a nation's income inequality and things like homicide rates and teenage pregnancy.

It is a tad ironic of Lauryn to complain about a system which she and her bandmates have clearly benefited from.

Still, doesn't change the fact that the Fugees were an excellent group when they were still together.

EDIT: Just read some recent history - kudos to her for what she did at the Vatican Concert, waaaay before it was dealt with in the "real" world. And a shame that she seemed to have issues which were at the heart of the disbanding of the group.

Someone has been reading the daily mail.

2013 Federal conviction for tax evasion
On May 6, 2013, Hill was sentenced to federal prison for three months after being convicted of tax evasion. [78] She had faced a maximum of three years in prison; one year of incarceration for each of three counts of tax evasion. [79] Hill pleaded guilty and her attorney was satisfied with the sentence. [80] Hill stated at the time of her arrest (for failing to file tax returns or pay $970,000 in taxes on over $2.3 million dollars in income) [81] that the pop culture business was a "climate of hostility, false entitlement, manipulation, racial prejudice, sexism and ageism." [82] During sentencing she said, "I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that" , apparently in reference to her previous assertions regarding the music business industry and her claim that "over-commercialisation and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual. [83] Five of Ms. Hill's six children are grandchildren of reggae music legend Bob Marley, having been fathered by Rohan Marley. [84] The judge sentencing Hill for not paying taxes on the $2.3 million dollars of income from 2005 to 2009, heard Hill explain that she had been living "very modestly". She alluded to the fact that other people in the music business have made much money from the sale of her 16 million records saying, "Someone did the math, and it came to around $600 million. And I sit here before you trying to figure out how to pay a tax debt? If that's not like enough to slavery, I don't know." [85] No mention was made as to why Hill did not schedule payments or file returns during the years that she earned the income. Hill's attorney, Nathan Hochman, speaking to the press after sentencing said Hill has now paid her tax debt in full. [86] Mr. Hochman said that Hill's clean record, her dependent minor children, and the fact that other celebrities have been "let off and never criminally prosecuted...Willie Nelson being at least one example" helped Hill during her sentencing. [87] After Hills' arrest last year she defended her right to "resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival." [88] She does now, however, intend to work with the music industry again, saying "It has been reported that I signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes. Yes, I have recently entered into an agreement with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, to launch a new label, on which my new music will be released. And yes, I am working on new music." [89] Lauryn Hill has not released a music recording since her 1998 solo album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." [90]

Here lies the problem. If she had had a proper education, she would have learned that she, like everyone else, must pay her taxes.

You what?

I earn above the national average, and my last payslip has my total deductions at 23%

Council tax is 5% of net earnings.

VAT on my usual monthly expenditure is 9% of net.

TV licence is 0.6% of net.

So my total 'tax' is around 38% (can't be accurate due to gross vs net).

Where are you getting 70% from?

Even if you earned £150k:

First £8k is tax free
The next £26k is at 20% (so £5k paid in tax)
The next £116k is at 40% (so £47k paid in tax)

Total tax paid on gross earnings is 35%, and even if you spend every penny of your net earnings on VAT goods, your total tax still only hits 49%.
