A woman lawyer wants the age of consent lowered to 13

Out of curiosity is this based on your religious views that you believe abstinence until 21 is a realistic proposition?

Personally I'm of the opinion that it should be 18 myself, like in places like Malta.

Not because of my religious beliefs (which would require someone being married), but because I do not believe that having such a laissez faire attitude is in the interests of people or the country.

We've had a sexual revolution, we've got sex in the TV, a moderately low age of consent, adult material available at a click on the internet and sex education in schools. Now we've got OFSTED saying kids should be taught about porn!?

It isn't working, and whilst we do not have the religious/moral authority of religion to provide guidance, I think a bit more strictness might actually help crack down on the extremely high rate of young pregnancies.

It's in human beings nature to reproduce at a young(ish) age, but not in the interest of people in our society. Tantalising young hormones really isn't helping. :p

personally I would like to keep the 16 age of consent.
make a new law making unprotected sex with anyone under the age of 18 illegal and class it as rape. (whilst hard to enforce I'm sure it would scare a lot of the young ones into using protection)

with stuff like the new sex superbug that could end up being far worse than aids.. it's madness to encourage anyone young to have sex by lowering the age of consent they just aren't responsible enough, even most people under 21 and slightly over give it away all to easy.

An antibiotic-resistant strain of gonorrhea—now considered a superbug—has some analysts saying that the bacteria's effects could match those of AIDS. "Getting gonorrhea from this strain might put someone into septic shock and death in a matter of days," Christianson said. "This is very dangerous."

females can't rape?
It's not an issue if people use protection like they should be when they aren't in a long-term serious stable relationship and trying for kids.

but hey lets lower the age of consent to 13 these girls won't want barbie dolls when they can just make their own, lets have more babies dumped in fields and bins

16 is too young. I know from when I was that age I was in no mental state to consent to such things. I look back on things I did and it's like "why?". The reason I suggested 21 is because by that time most have a regular income and can stand on their own two feet and make informed decisions. If you ask most people I bet the majority regret having sex when they did, particularly girls.

I also don't think it's right for kids to have kids, but that's just my opinion. I know you can't stop it, so I think the best thing to do is educate people on things such as contraception. I don't think we do that enough. This is not to say I agree with it, but we've gotta do something.

From a legal standpoint, sure, but what if under your proposals a girl under the age of 18 tells her boyfriend she's using protection so he doesn't have to but lies?

Surely the offence is committed by the girl, which means under your proposal she would be the rapist.

If kids at the age of 13, want to have sex with another person at their age, they will do it anyway, legal or not. As far as i'm aware, you can get condoms for free at that age anyway.

Yes. Because the minimum age of 16 stops us from having sex younger than that.

If kids want to have sex, they'll find a way. Much the same as they'll find a way to have a cigarette or a beer without parents finding out.

Crimes, if you make the minimum age 21 we'll end up with a nation of (even more) sexually repressed deviants that wander around town with hard-ons every time they see an underwear advert on a bus or billboard.

Sex has been thrown into our faces for decades now and it is still in a mess, so hushing up about it has never been the problem.

which is another reason young kids shouldn't be having sex if they are not mature enough of responsible enough.

EVEN IF A GIRL SAYS SHE HAS PROTECTION FROM THE PILL THIS DOES NOT STOP SEXUALLY TRANSMITED DISEASES! ALWAYS WEAR A RUBBER! UNLESS YOU ARE IN A LONG TERM RELATIONSHIP WITH SOMEONE YOU TRUST

You're kidding, right?

It's also a complete dodge of the question I asked you combined with some moral highground nonsense from the back of a condom packet.

Yes & No

Yes = because I hate seeing and knowing of girls that have got pregnant at 16.....(I say it Far to young to be pregnant)

No = because having sex is great fun...:D

It's not great when the girl falls pregnant and you find yourself facing the biggest responsibility of your life, something 16 year old kids should never have to deal with. This is the problem: kids don't think about the consequences. In fact, many adults don't, either.

it takes two to tango mate..
it should be up to both of them to ensure protection is used and not take someone's word for it.

maybe the "RAPE" thing is a bit harsh and some other crime could be invented but everything possible should be done to encourage or scare young impressionable naive teenagers into using protection for their own good.

Two to tango what? What on earth are you on about?

You made a statement, I asked a direct question and you responded with some inconsequential nonsense.

You say it should be a rape offense to not use protection, then say women cannot rape and completely implode when faced with an example that is not so clear cut. You cannot legislate for children as if they have the foresight and experience of adults or the overprotectiveness of a father for his daughter.

e: fear tactics. Nice. Kids grow up now terrified thinking the clap is deadly, that masturbation will make them go blind and you want to add to that the fear of having sex will have them branded as rapists.
