Forgot how bad job searching was :(

My apprenticeship ends in 10 weeks and have been putting my self out there but wondering what type of roles specifically I should be applying for probably 1st line support call centre type jobs.

18months working as a IT Technician at a school
CCNA
A+
70-865 (First half of MCSE)
Level 3 in IT Professional Competence.
Highlander HTML Course.

I probably shouldn't have left it this late, but we will see how it goes applying.
 
Should be able to get something decent mate,word of warning though, going from an IT tech in a school to 1st line support (depending on the company) will probably be pretty dull.

Naturally, see what the jobs are like themselves as 1st line can mean anything nowadays :p
 
Fed up with recruitment agents!

Looking for a new job and all I can find are the same jobs through the same recruitment agencies. I've applied for a number of different ones but getting nowhere. I either hear nothing from them or the insist on talking to me during the day which is impossible as I'm at work, they refuse to email me anything and I'm getting nowhere!

On a whim I sent a CV and cover letter to a US company and have had 2 interviews and lined up a 3rd all within 3 days. How can a company in a completely different timezone be quicker than someone just down the road!

TLDR: I hate recruitment agencies.

I will be starting Accounts Assistant position soon at a company. I am currently working as a casual worker at Royal mail. The company wants reference from Royal Mail. I will be working weekdays at the company. However I am thinking of continuing with Royal Mail also and doing Saturday shifts to save up money for travel and other household expenses. The thing is I am not sure if I am allowed two jobs. I will be sent the new contract soon so will need to see what company regulations are. I wanted to ask the HR lady at the company about this situation but I have backed down in case it looks bad upon me. I know one Royal Mail casual who is doing another job also.What do you guys suggest?

Unless their contract explicitly states you can't there should be no reason why not? I know loads of people who run 2/3 jobs.

The other thing naturally will be your tax code will be a lot worse off....Presumably BR?

well, due to my stupid/unique skill set i only actually applied to 3 jobs with 8K spread of wage between them.

I consider myself really really lucky as i got the highest payed one (that payed more than the advert, never had that before) and the one i most want to do. None of the others got back to me, even the one i could do with my eyes closed. The recruiter was really good and i had a friday interview and monday acceptance! They even payed my travel to the interview! I am pretty good at interviews i find, i dont think i have ever not been offered a job i have had an interview for that i didnt want.

Its a job related to science but thankfully not in the lab, its statistics based and with a good company (massive) that actually my step dad worked for in a different division and he did really well. Hopefully it may even let me get into database work and mix science with computing

Pension is amazing to me me as they match up to 10% and i have never had a pension that matches at all! (ive worked for some crappy companies)

It was only by chance i applied for the job, i could have easily missed it! I dread to think what position i would have been in without it! My expertise are so niche that although i am likely to get a job there are only a hanful around in the country


So actually the redundancy worked out in my favour...
If i hadnt have taken the job i wouldnt have moved and therefore not looked around this area
if i hadnt have been made redundant i wouldnt have been looking for jobs
this job is actually worth 12% more in pay excluding the pension!
its a company where i can make a career for the first time - all other jobs have been dead end!
the role is the first one i have ever had that i am happy with
the redunduncy gave me 2 months pay for the price of one as i have been payed my notice

I really was getting VERY worried about what was going to happen!

I think i remember your original thread regarding places to move in Huntingdon.

It's weird how things work out sometimes, complete turnaround. I think I know the company you now work for, and if it is then I hear it's a very good place to work. Congrats buddy.

How are you finding life over here in Cambridgeshire?

Do you mean the 70-685? That's the MCDST isn't it?

I'd look at some server stuff if you want to get anything half decent.

I did all that apprentice stuff but through work (I lied on the apprentice application and said i'd only been to college as you weren't allowed on it if you had a degree) I only did it so I could get the free 70-680 course and exam at the end.

I'm currently half way through an evening MCITP course but i'm losing motivation with this as well as I just don't see me reaping any sort of reward having completed it, I'm not sure, I guess time will tell.

How did you find the CCNA? I was lead to believe its quite difficult and quite advanced but I've seen tonnes of people doing these apprenticeships come out with it so I'm thinking it can't be that hard?!

I'll hopefully get my MCITP under my belt by the end of Summer and then potentially look at the CCNA, the only issue I have about doing the CCNA is that we don't use any Cisco kit at our place at all so I'm feeling the studying may just be lost on me as I won't have day to day use of it so i'm still umming and ahhing over it. However i've been tinkering with Sharepoint at work so may look at developing that somewhere down the line. Such a ballache that you have to get certified up the eyeballs to even get a look in these days on top of having several years experience! Luckily i'll be nearing 5 years in IT this year with a wide range of experience from 1st line support to now being the sole IT Administrator for the company i'm at so hopefully if I get some more studying done it will possibly lead to a better job down the line!

Generally speaking it would be sensible to inform the company if you're going to have more than one job, there may well be tax implications and potentially considerations about working time but as long as it doesn't interfere with your other job then I'd suspect there won't be an issue. If you're worried about approaching HR then you can couch it simply as a question e.g. "My current role with Royal Mail has asked me to provide additional cover at weekends, will this be an issue and if it is ok what do I need to do?".

LOL this is the attitude I like. I have been made redundant myself and now looking forward for this 'opportunity' to get out my current line of work and into something new hopefully more intellectually stimulating

dont think iv come across one agency that arnt staffed by idiots.

and talking of idiots emailed the work program idiots at remploy this morning, 7 hours later no reply so i phone the office and get a answer phone at 1620 ?! so i guess they are really busy finding work for me or just ignoring the phone.

guess il have fun tomorrow when i go to their office and ask for the manager. iv had it with them now. last time i was down 3 weeks ago they said they would forward my cv to a job and get me on the sia course and send me the info. so far no info.

best thing is the sia course has been on the cards for over 10 weeks and this supposed job for 18 weeks. id just like a straight answer from them for once on wtf is actually going on.

rant over with for now :mad:
 
I start my new job as an IT Support Analyst for an awesome company on the 3rd June, was nerve racking waiting for the phone call as I knew it was between me and one other guy.
 
well i hit the work program office this morning at remploy and talk about covering each others back and spouting utter rubbish.

from flat out lying claiming that they dont get any sort of money for finding me a job where i work for 6 months or more, to changing their story on what is going on with the supposed sia training 4 different times within ten minutes.

hopefully it will stick a rocket up their backsides but some how i doubt it, im expecting more prodding about what im doing to find work. one funny thing though, the manger says "we arnt here to find you work, that's your job" im sorry who's getting paid by the government to provide a service !?

now il have to wait for my next official appointment but i don't expect anything other than the same mediocrity and shifting of blame on to others. guess il have to try and find the cash for the sia course myself now as well as find out how i make sure these idiots don't see a penny when i find myself work :rolleyes:
 
Interview today for a huge environmental consultancy firm. More nervous than usual as this is as close to my dream job as I am likely to get. Hope I dont balls it all up.

I'm guessing he's trying to say it's their job to find the jobs or show you them but it's your job to actually get the job? :p
 
honestly the impression i got from the manager and my adviser is they are their to pester me and poke me until i find a job to get them the bonus payment after 6 months. im now looking at sia courses myself and seeing how much il have to pay as iv had it with these so called advisers.
 
ok im, on the work program, which is provided by remploy (who subcontract for G4S) this is separate to the jobcentre, they are supposed to help find you work, training and work experience for you with the aim of getting you in to a permanent position. although you wouldnt know it by the treatment most people get.
