PS3 worth purchasing?

I'm sure you've heard it a thousand times before but just want your opinion on my views on buying one.

I currently have an Xbox Elite 120GB which hasn't seen use for maybe 6 months after I just stopped playing it really, couldn't be bothered forking out for live, and the most of the games had become dull.

However, I really want to play/replay the Ratchet & Clank series. The PS3 seems the best way to do this, with the HD trilogy and also the newer games (are they any good)? Looking at PS3's the Super Slim model looks good, however, obviously the most expensive.

Is it worth buying new? Are they worth the premium over a slim/phat? Is there anything I should be wary of if I do go secondhand? And do you think anybody would be willing to swap for my Xbox Elite with box, 2 HDD's, games etc? Or do PS3's still carry a massive premium over Xbox's?

Also the media capabilities of the PS3 seem to surpass the 360's and the fact that it takes a standard HDD I like. I would probably get the Uncharted series too, any other games that I should look out for?

I'm aware that the PS4 is due out in November or so, but I can't see it being able to play any of the PS3's games. And no way would I be forking out for a new console premium either.

/wall of text - cheers.

Yea it is, I mean, you can pay £40 a year [probably cheaper] for PS+ and it instantly unlocks games to play and then you get more games every month.

Also as you say, there is a huge back catalog of games and PS3 only games out there which might tickle your fancy.

You don't need a PS+ subscription for the on demand stuff either unlike Xbox.

And a word of caution, I have the superslim 500gb and the HDD that came with it is terrible and in some games you will experience stutter e.g uncharted 3 and dragons dogma I have on mine. There are 2 drives Hitachi and Toshiba and it is the Hitachi drive which is the bad one.
Heres the thread:

So its a gamble with a 500gb super slim unless you buy the 12gb version and buy your own HDD.

Also have The last of us on your radar ;)

If you've lasted the whole generation without one, you could probably wait until the PS4 comes out, then new PS3s will be even more affordable. That said, second-hand PS3s go on eBay for under £70 quite regularly... so if you want a cheap one now that's probably a good way to go.

If I did go second-hand I think I would only go as low as a Slim and no older. Wouldn't want to risk a 6 year old one dying on me. I do want a 'new' gadget though, not second hand, but the savings would make it worthwhile. :p

Definitely worth having, a second-hand one that's been looked after would be a good purchase. As Macky said, go for a Slim one if you can, they're quieter and more reliable than the older ones.

Uncharted games are great, start with the first one and work your way through, and if you enjoy those, The Last Of Us comes out next month which is from the same studio. Don't think I've looked forward to a game quite as much as this, it's looking superb.

Just missed a 500GB super slim on the bay for £139.99 wit Fifa 13. 10 sold in about an hour. :( Wasn't sure if legit so left it.

Don't forget the members market here, PS3's sell quite regularly there.

The Uncharted series is great, the first hasn't age too well, but it's still worth playing.

PS+ is great, just remember you lose the free games once the subscription runs out and until you renew it.

Could have just haggled an excellent deal on a super slim from a local seek and sell. £125 + for console 2 controllers and 10 games!

Personally I would go new or at least the newest model. Only because of the lower consumption and the warranty.

All the rachet games are very good, as are the uncharted series, infamous games, god of war series. I literally could go on and on, LBP, sly heavy rain, motorstorm, ni no kuni.

Plus the up coming last of us & beyond: two souls both look fantastic.

I'm in a similar sitution - I went from PS3 slim to xbox 360 slim (got around £100 after fees) as at the time a lot of my friends were on XBL. I haven't turned the xbox on for over a year or so, but have got an urge to play Yakuza 4 (always a fan of the series), the new Sly and Ni No Kuni :) Think it's time I made the switch...

Don't forget Tales of Xillia is coming to PS3 in August too :D probably the game I'm most excited about this year!

Ugh struggling to commit to buying one. The Slim as opposed to the super slim seems to be the most popular. Fair few issues reported with the SS. But then a slim could be up to 4 years old? These things don't break easily do they?

They don't, at least not from what I've seen. Mine's seen very heavy use over the past couple of years and it's still running perfectly fine.

Doesn't sound bad. I'd honestly get a SS if I hadn't heard that you need to buy a bracket to put a HDD in the 12GB model, what a farce, and if the 500GB wasn't faulty on half of the models. Ugh. Trying to get a Slim for around £80 though.
