New details have come to light regarding the flagship HD 9970 part from AMD.

I am not disputing that AMD could come up with something huge (I think and hope for everyones sake that they do) I think if they are going to 20nm a complete redesign is also in order. Anything to do with the HD 7970 in GPU terms is ancient history and things have moved on. I am sure we are going to see an entirely new and probably more efficient layout.

Their entire future HSA, GPU, APU business model is built around the GCN design, everything is geared and designed with that, and GCN is certainly not broken, its very good and AMD are very happy with it.

So why change it? if it isn't broke don't fix it. especially at this stage.

Progress

I don't know what AMD will come up with, the only thing I am sure of is it won't be a carbon copy of the HD 7970 x 2

HAHAHA this :D

Regardless of the truth pretty much every GPU generation at about this time in the cycle we get the inevitable fanboy "leak" with a wishful thinking double the spec of everything.

The 20nm design kits have been available to AMD for awhile so I suspect someones got hold of whats possibly a prototyped design that may not have any relevance on what their actual focus is - no one I've talked to recently is aware of any spec being set in stone at this stage for AMD's 20nm GPUs.

AMD should just throw a road map into the mix once the GTX 7## series is out.

This typical tight limpness is unhealthy, Nvidia shout about what they have coming at every possible opportunity, great.... what are AMD doing? "nothing seen, nothing heard, nothing coming to you some time next never"

I like that about Nvidia, they timed the GTX Titan release to coincide with the PS4 announcement, the GTX 7XX series looks like it will come at the same time as the Xbox 720 :D

None of which will effect console sales in the slightest as from my experience most console gamers dismiss the pc as a gaming machine. I have showed my friends who are console gamers my pc in action and they can see its superior in graphics power and they still dismiss it. None of them know amd or nvidia even exist lol.

Done the same for the wifes little cousins. They are oblivious to PC gaming except....... Minecraft :(

Hah they are probably a bit intimidated by a pc.It is like comparing a mini to a hotrod! My mates game on PS3 and are salivating over PS4 at 30 years old and ive tried and tried to convince em but no go.

Ive been on thier setups and if i ran COD or Crysis at 720p on medium it might look pretty much the same except for the MOHW games in MP that go to 30 or 45fps i cant tell which wich makes it painful to watch.

Slap em down in front of a Haswell 9970 rig playing the same games at 120fps.If they cannot see the difference then they are probably retarded. In fact most of em dont even notice the 45fps drops lol....I notice drops to around 55 from 60 on BF3.

I am spoiled and on a different planet to them in gaming terms.PS4 is only going to close the gap until 4k renders it obsolete again.

PS Rome II in sept 13th any chance of 9970 by then?

Looks nice, but I'm happy with my 7950 :D I'll be keeping it for a few years to come, especially at the gpu prices I imagine they will come out with

This statement alone proves why most console gamers hate PC gamers and call them elitist.

I have quiet a few M8's who game on PC every night and quess what?, not a single one of them knows whats inside thier PC.
All they do is chuck a big wedge of cash at a pre built every time they need a new machine and don't care whats in it as long as it works. It's all about the gaming for them not who's got the biggest **** on the block.

Yeah, I can see my Brother-in-law's face turn blank when he's on his xBox 360 and I talk about this or that new game I got for PC......

Console gaming is great. I lost a good chunk of my life playing Gran Turismo and its newer brothers. I would have preferred those games on PC and imagine how GT5 would look if done to the max on PC.

When the newer consoles are launched, we could do with a PC title or 2 that blow anything the consoles have away. We have the power, just not the games :(

as above, I have several friends who are PC Gamers through and through, but don't really know or care about the hardware, they are quite capable of doing upgrades if they want to, but mostly they just throw money at me every couple of years to build one for them (usually knowing that I'll have a spare PSU or graphics card laying around that I'll give them a big discount on)

I have been playing GT since 1998 on the PS1, that is the only game worth getting a PS3 for, I want that on PC.

Have the same problem with both of my brothers, but they just don't get it my younger bro believes the Xbox graphics are just as good as a PC and that I am talking crap lol
