Being a police officer and owning a dog

Dogs don't turn into depressed lunatics if left alone for a portion of the day. If being home alone for a length of time is part of their routine then they adapt to it. Me and my girlfriend both have 9-5 jobs and the dog is perfectly fine to be left alone whilst we work. There are limits though and in the OP's case when you could be away for long periods irregularly then I think it would be unfair.
Agreed, main reason my wife and I haven't gotten a dog.
She can't manage a full one 
The point is a dog doesn't mind being left alone as long as it has consistency. We leave at the same time every day and come back at the same time everyday, it knows full well that when we come back it has a good walk and a good feed and lots of love, if you have irregular shifts then it may be a bad idea.

Indeed. We put up a webcam and all it does is sleep all day when we leave him alone while we're at work.
Even when we are there during the day she still just sleeps all day.
Get a wife
This, you will get a fab looking German Shepherd/Alsatian, have all its vet bills paid for and I guess it's food as well. Wow, that would be fantastic!

this is what i would go for
i agree. we dont leave ours any longer than 5 hours.
the big question is, how long can you hold onto a pee? a trained dog will not pee in the house but holding onto a pee can damage you.
My dog is left from 8 till 1 (when I go home and take her out for a good walk) then from 2 till 4 (when I get home and take her out for a good walk). Once / twice a week she goes to my parents, who love her as much as she loves them.

I leave my Siberian Husky at home alone from 7.30am to 3.30pm in her cage.
People don't seem to be able to accept that a dog is exactly that, it is not a human nor does it have the same requirements as a human. I wouldn't want to be locked in a cage all day, she on the other hand seem to love it.

Mirin how much you guys seem to be missing the point that this guy is living alone and wants to join the police. Where it's normal to work 10 hour shifts if not more. Neither of your situations are in any way comparable and I don't think you'll find anyone disagreeing with you.........

I think leaving a dog alone for 7 or less hours a day is fine. Give them some things to occupy themselves and they'll be fine.
As a police officer I think your irregular shifts would be a problem though and you could end up being away from home for longer periods than planned.

This is vastly more important, some people in here are living in fairyland
If someone can afford to feed a rescue dog, do it. Nothing else matters, that tiny bit of attention instantly makes that dogs life far better than it was in kennels. Besides, they sleep all day anyway.
Although Cats > Dogs anyway

no.
it can have a pee break after 5 hours at most. this is as long as our dog gets left alone.

why does she need to be in a cage all that time? is she still a puppy? if not why isnt she trained enough to be ok in the house alone? most dogs by a few months old are well behaved enough to be left alone and not needing to be caged.
