Oven Imploded: Just the right moment.

Yeah well whatever happened he had to damage himself to get the claim for it which is psychotic by itself.

It didn't happen, like the OP he probably had door glass shatter which is very common.

I don't for one second dispute what you say about washing machines exploding, but at what point are they mostly like to spray glass? During a spin cycle, I imagine?

I was re-iterating the stories of exploding washing machines that has been happening but the glass in them is very strong so not likely to happen.

Yes It did happen and it was most likely the exact same thing as the OP however the person I knew took advantage of this situation and did what I said above to blame the Oven had another issue!

And the manufacturer and Curry's took your mate at his word and just gave him £50,000?
A bit of glass in the leg does not equal £50,000, negligence occurring in death doesn't even reach that amount most of the time.
Every day I see payouts for negligent claims and I also know the investigations that are carried out so IF this happened to your mate he would not have got that amount if anything.

Is the story on Snopes :D

For a long time the glass has been 'Safety Glass' and unless there was a bomb in the oven it wouldn't 'blow up' and shoot glass that fast that it would burn a huge hole in his Jeans and embed into his legs.
Curry's would know this and the manufacturer would definitely know this.
I worked on a cooker factory for 27 years and this never happened however if it was a washing machine it could have happened.
Just put it down to your mate exaggerating a bit.

I can tell you - when our cooker front went (yes safety glass) - my legs would have been a right mess without a shadow of doubt if I'd been stood in front of it when it went.

it took me 2 days off work to clear all the glass up - it was literally everywhere (relatively small kitchen)

when it went - it wasn't the typical hollywood "boom" type explosion, it was a very loud "gunshot" like sound - I was so shocked I was on my knees in shock for about 20 minutes (worse than when I've had minor road accidents)

Over 27 years I heard 100s + 100s of door glass explode and always over workers.
Yes it does go with a bang, yes it does go everywhere, yes it is scary but I never knew of anybody ever going to the surgery for it and these workers were fitting stuff to the cooker at the time.

mmm thats interesting -well it didn't injure me - as I was out of the way at the time - but it didn't half make a mess ! How had the ones you are talking about break/blow ? I was only guessing the glass would cause damage to someone as it obviously blew with some force - most pieces were the typical safety glass broken size of 7mm by 7mm or so

the glass went through small gaps in cupboards etc - it took varnish off the cupboards opposite where the glass hit, and amusingly I found glass in the cupboards where it had blown through. Literally all that was left on the oven door itself was the metal verticals - with the odd tiny bit of glass left on the vertical - the rest of the 2 panes of glass was all over the kitchen

it wrecked the washing machine - which was almost opposite, as there was glass in every crevice, any moving part that had a gap to the kitchen had glass in it - you'd pull a draw out and feel the glass rubbing in side etc. I tried cleaning them all out - but there was glass you couldn't get to

loss-adjuster came round - took one look at the cooker and washing machine - and signed it off immediately

I can't find the photos :( was pre-digital days so I'd only one set of a couple of prints

my son hasn't done it again thankfully

thing was - we'd emptied the shopping 3-4 days before - but hadn't used the oven since then for some reason (I think I'd been using the hobs). Son had put the beans tin right in the corner - and the light didn't work on the oven - so even thought I'd opened the oven up to put food in - I didn't see the can.

You never mentioned a beans can in post 86 (I didn't see your first post) which puts a completely different spin on it.

In the OPs case the door glass just shattered which can be scary but no immediate danger (unless he also had a can in the oven).
