Traveling discussion

Yeah, Cairns is a bit of a hole tbh. The surrounding area (atherton table lands, Kurranda, Mossman, Port Douglas and of course, the reef (which is better done via port douglas) are nice.

Yea, I was told to travel to Cairns then move on pretty much after a day. Roughly planned, it's a case of arrive in Cairns, immediately head north to Daintree National Park, then down to Whitsundays and hop onto a party boat and have a boogy for a few days haha.

Then Brisbane then Sydney and finally Melbourne, it will be a very short trip in Oz as I'm wanting to get to Melbourne, see some family and setup camp and secure a job asap.

They're usually about $100 a day so the one from Rio to Dakar would be about $700.

That's pretty good! When I looked a couple of years ago to go from the UK to US (NY or Boston) when I had months off I could only find ones that cost around £1500...

That sounds about right. I've been thinking about doing one for a while and I found that Rio-Dakar one as it's one of the cheapest their is due to how short the journey is. I think you can actually join the boat at Recife to save a day or two as well.

I'm not overly fussed however don't want to be solo all the time so would be nice to join a group or 2 out there at some point. Was it ok when you went in terms of other backpackers? I will be staying in hostels as well.

Thanks

Dude, I was in all of the countries I visited in times which were regarded as 'off-peak'.

This amazed me, every single place was completely heaving with people, and a number of hostels had no rooms/beds left at all!

I can't imagine how much business the places make during peak periods!

The same surely if they are full :p

Haha, wondered when someone would pick up on that.

Well, I would really prefer to leave a month later than planned as that extra couple of grand gives me a lovely cushion of security and I would rather that than miss out on a few shin digs that might have stopped due to the 'season'.

Hmm, ok, that's a shame then, was hoping I was just unlucky!

I am thinking of doing a few week trip at some point involving flying to ascention island then getting the post office ship to st Helena and then on to cape town, with a week or two on each island. Looks like it could be an experience, even if a bit expensive!

I chose not to on both the expense and the other on a buddy of mine who did cargo ship travel. He said whilst it does sound cool and you gain that experience. It soon wears off and you realise you are stuck on a ship just for bragging rights and the experience is not really worth the time or money...

Each to their own though. I mainly wanted to do it due to my dad being a submarine mechanic back in his day so would like to spend some time on the sea. Whilst no the same, still something to have a chat about.

While this isn't actually a "travelling" query I think it would fit here nicely...

Anyone done a multi day camel trek? I'm looking for things to do at Christmas and rather than two weeks skiing/national parking it would be the perfect time to do a camel trek in the Sahara. If so who did you do it with/organise it?

Smart-arse :p

I actually re-read this post afterwards and thought someone would pick up on it haha! But still, people must struggle (if not booking in advance, which I never did, took the fun out of it!) to get places to sleep!

Wow that looks incredible and right up my ally OP.

Has anyone done the pit of fire (door to hell) in turkmenistan and much else to do/see in the region?

I'm going there in October, there is a fair amount to see in Turkmenistan depending on what you're interested in;

  • Kow Ata underground swimming lakes
  • Various horse stables
  • Huge Saudi funded Mosque
  • Various crazy monuments in Ashgabat
  • Tolchuka Carpet and Camel Bazaar
  • Ancient city of Merv
  • Archaeological site of Donur Gepe
  • Russian Orthodox church in Mary

Also if you feel a bit adventurous you can take a two day excursion into Afghanistan to visit Herat. I was hoping to do this but the costs of transport when travelling alone were prohibitive, also I couldn't get much info on Dual entry Turkmen visas.

Iran and Uzebekistan are both supposed to be incredible but I haven't been to either of them yet.
