Channel 4 - Skint

Lol watched this last night. What a mouthpiece that 16 yo lass was.

I work with these kind people every day. The respect some of these people have towards money/the system and hard working families is disgusting, the amount of times I have had to bite my tongue is unreal. Worst being when I hear some 30+ yo person who has never had a job in there life complaining that they have to pay £5 council rent a week (free house rent, £5 water through council) and still get into£200+ rent arrears.

Still, it always stems back the parents/grandparents and having no respectable role models to look up to whilst growing up. Suppose the neighbourhood you grow up in has a big effect on your up-bringing to.
 
It was the sense of entitlement that got to me like the Government should help them with their stupid decisions. Like the guy who had 7 kids and said because he had paid into the system for a bit he was entitled to take, erm no with 7 kids I can safely say your contribution account was already in the red.
 
Woman who went to charity because she couldn't afford to feed her 5 kids as she had £4 left...

Yet said takes £1600 a month, has a 60 odd inch tv, games console, loads of rings and a tattoo kick.

I think this show is designed to make you want to kick a hole in your TV in anger
 
I don't know what to make of the people in this show. I think my view of people on benefits is warped by the job that I do. I deal with these sort of people on a daily basis who tell me they're struggling financially yet they have luxuries like Sky etc, things that people working full time can struggle to afford.

The couple with 5 children getting £1600 a month and saying they were still struggling shocked me. I found it ironic that she was saying this whilst her partner was playing Xbox 360 on a huge flat screen TV.

I know that some people do need genuine help from the government, which is fine - That's what the system is there for after all - To help those who are genuinely in need of financial assistance, but you have to be willing to work hard to provide for yourself and your family without needing the help from the taxpayer.

I don't think anyone is born stupid as such, they just fall into a cycle like this and make themselves stupid. Almost sort of like a learned helplessness.

The fact there is a strong correlation between race and IQ tends to suggest that we're not blank slates at all. If intelligence is say 60% inherited and 40% upbringing, then the chances are these people would never be amazing physicists, entrepreneurs or inventors.
 
just watched skint and that young couple with 5 kids are a prime example of what is wrong with the benefits system in this country, she is 21 and has 5 children just so she doesnt have to work so why should i have to feed her kids and now pay for her to get married. as for being skint she gets £1600 a month that is over £500 a month more than what i EARN.

So living on benefits is hereditary is it?

Mind sets/attitudes are not genetic, emotional intelligence (ability to self motivate, delay gratification, self awareness of emotions, positivity etc) is not either, I suggest you do your research to understand the depth of my statement.

Wrong reasoning. Right conclusion. The correlation between "race" (which correlates, btw, very poorly with actual genetic variation) and IQ is actually rather poor and breaks down rapidly in the face of environmental influence.

People hear "60% inherited and 40% upbringing" and imagine that means you've got 60 IQ points from your parents, and 40 IQ points from your upbringing but this is nonsense. In fact, everything is a combination. Every single trait is, in fact, 100% genetic and 100% environmental under the right circumstances and criteria (don't believe me? Teach long division to your cat or count the toes on a double leg amputee). Moreover the proportion of environmental influence is dependent upon the genetics and, conversely, the proportion of genetic influence is dependent upon the environment.

Various studies (e.g. Minnesota) suggest otherwise. Obviously 'race' is not a very scientific term, but it's a broadly understood term which nicely encompasses the realities of the situation.

It's certainly not a case of 60 points IQ from nature and 60 points for nurture. However nature does limit the absolute influence environment can have. Because as you rightly point out, no matter what the environment, I cannot teach a cat long division.

But all of this is generalisations. I could confidently say that if we took a million white persons and a million black persons, and then averaged their IQ's, the white group would have a higher IQ. But on an individual level, there are of course many highly intelligent blacks and many extremely stupid whites, so none of this should be seen as an argument for thugs to be thuggish.
 
there was lots to be sad about on the last episode. but what struck me was that the 21 year old mother of 5...rather than sell her husbands to be's game console and games she would rather take food from a charity. come on priorities.....also no one who has a 50 inch tv is suffering from poverty.

5 kids at 21 and still has time to play video games. Why are they allowed to keep their children when their priorities are not in place.

The fact she thinks the gov should supply them food instead of charity makes my blood boil.

Correlation does not equal causation.

Was the study adjusted for cultural & socio-economic influences?.
