AMD Kabini/Jaguar official review thread

Its really difficult to judge the performance given that largely they pitted a low power mobile chip against significantly higher power usage chips, other than the Atom Clover Trail (which it utterly annihilates) but is less power than the A4-5000.

It doesn't make much sense, where do these reviewers have this chip fitting in?
Are they so confused by this?

Its a large tablet / low power Netbook type chip. so what these reviewers do, they test it against full blown Laptop and Desktop chips and a mobile phone - Tablet like chip at the other end....

Its like comparing a Fait 500 to a Ferrari 458, which are both excellent in their own right.... but, when you see someone do something like that your left confused thinking WTF just happened???????? did that make any sense to anyone? :confused:


In any case, in its little pigeon hole (and its a real shame they didn't compare it to neighbouring pigeon holes) it seems as far as I can work out pretty epic, shocking for AMD in that it is powerful and very efficient.

It was at least good of Anand to pick up on the 30 -40% IPC increase from Bobcat at the same power usage. < maybe that's whats thrown them all?

Certainly that would be very welcome on top of Piledriver, we can all hope.

The article also has a good overview of the SOC too.

AMD wants to knock Intel and ARM off their mobility perch in 2013, and the new Temash APU is how it expects to do it.

Intel had set its sights on doing that to ARM, I do wander if Intel and ARM had counted AMD out and ignored them at their peril.

Because for the moment at least it seems Temash is much better than anything they have, and perhaps third parties may like it enough to adopt it.

either way, it probably will solidly be a three horse race with AMD having the upper hand right now.

I'm confused. The A4 they tested was 15W against the 17W Ivy.
The overpriced Atom it killed is like 3W.

I think Clovertrails a brilliant SOC for its intended market, but it's ridiculously overpriced, my Vivobook laptop (Ivy i3 ultra) was cheaper than the starting 399.99 of Clovertrail tablets.
Intel have been making noise about Baytrail amending that.

Having had a 10W CPU/GPU in a tablet, I wouldn't want to again, for a laptop sure.

I really think you need to go to spec savers :p

Cheaper than Intels ultra low power i3/i5 stuff? That could make some nicely priced Windows 8 touchscreen laptops.
I finally found one the other day, it was about 400 quid, an A4.

They also tested the 8w Temash and didn't distinguish between them and higher powered chips.
 
AMD have put a huge amount of effort into system power and efficiency of the chip. Efficiency = performance, its as simple as that. Intel has done loads of good work, stuff like being able to clock up for less time, used to be if something caused the chip to go out of idle, it would take a half second or whatever to drop down to idle afterwards, and now its like 0.01ms, but when background windows crap causes it to pop out of idle every couple seconds over an hour you're talking about huge amounts of extra time using full voltage and clocks with higher leakage, when its simply finished its work and is waiting to clock down. AMD has been doing similar things in terms of dropping idle power, leakage and maximising the tdp one part of the core can use by dropping the tdp of other unused parts of the core.

Every watt saved at idle(which is way more time than under load.. usually) means more they can use under load, to do things faster, which means it can get back to idle quicker, and save more power.

The main thing that AMD is doing right here is, Intel have the high end performance sorted, and ARM have been working on super low power efficiency for years. Fighting full on with Intel at max power, or ARM at ultra low power is a VERY expensive and difficult prospect, AMD picked the segment neither is strong in, 5-25W and they built by far the best chip for that power bracket.

Atom is trying to fight ARM, its improving but its still not very good(but has Intel's deep pockets to make companies make products with it), Intel is also trying to force an architecture designed for 4Ghz running and 50-100W usage into the same segment Jaguar is designed for, its lying about TDP's, its clocking up, it has worse power usage and is stupidly expensive because its bigger chips being underutilised, with a HUGE process advantage, and vastly more cash Intel still haven't made anything that does very well in the 5-20W bracket. With the process and money advantage, they aren't doing awfully getting down towards 20W, but the stupid cost of their ULV chips and the die size make them still a complete joke compared to the alternatives.

However AMD's success rests purely on who will support/use/put it out in products. AMD needs to flood the market so when you go into places like PC world every other lower power laptop is AMD, rather than going around and finding very few AMD options anywhere. They also really need to get Sony and MS to put the AMD logo all over games on the consoles as brand recognition to get people to actually look for AMD laptops when they go to buy one.
 
disappointed with the anad review - HD4000 `entry` graphics? AMD have been at and above the HD4000 for a few years now
