Hey,

Don't know a lot about harddrivers.

Looking for something inbetween 500gb - 1tb which I can use to store film footage & sounds. I will be using it in After Effects and other similar programes, so the faster the better. I can spend anywhere from £50-£150, just want something decent which doesnt have to be powered by the mains plug and only plugs into the PC.

I have a USB 3 slot if thats any help. I might have the odd game on there as well, but overall that isnt to important.

Cheers

Edit - Forgot to mention its an external unit

Wouldnt recommend an external for AE work, why dont you just add an internal in?
Seagate Barracuda 4TB = £100

Sadly as Ive got to bring to several different places to work on it.

Will look into getting that one though for the main computer. Cheers mate.

Makes sense then. In that case an external would be better. I own a USB 3 Seagate GoFlex which is okay. How much data are you planning to work with?

Quite a lot, the files naturally are MVI files so take up a hell of a lot of space. However once rendered they take up a lot less. Was looking around 1TB for now and see how that goes. Sound files don't take up much room so that shouldnt be a problem, and after effects will be on an external hard drive.

Was looking at the Samsung M3 500GB USB3.0 Slimline earlier. Wll take a look at the USB Seagate GoFlex.

Ah, forgot you wanted one that doesnt need a plug. Id stay away from 2.5 externals because of their speeds. I have a few 2.5's and one USB 3 and theyre trash.
Try to go with a 3.5 external. The speeds will be much faster.

Build your own USB3 7.2K 2.5" portable.
3.5" will suck if you intend on using it in different locations as you will need to lug about a PSU not to mention a big cumbersome hard drive unit!

USB3 2.5" Case = £5-£6 on ebay
750Gb 2.5" Caviar Black 7200RPM HDD With 5 years warranty = £56.93 delivered

£62 For a super fast Ultra Portable (Pretty much the same size as a 2.5" hdd) which is guaranteed for 5 years :-)

Obviously if the OP CAN go with a 3.5 external then by all means go for it. But if it really is inconvenient then just go with a 2.5.
