Agreed the 780's do look very nice, but are they worth double the price of a HD 7970? That's the question people should ask themselves. Problem is the 780 is fast but not fast enough to get 60fps @ max settings in the more demanding games @ 1440P even the Titan isn't, so people still need to go the dual GPU card route to achieve 60fps+ anyway, unless you're willing to lower settings, my guess is someone who's spending £600 on a GPU doesn't want to lower settings. So your looking at over £1000 on dual GTX 780's or about £580 - £620 on dual 7970's..

They are nice cards, but no way on earth are they worth £300+ more than a 7950 and that's a non ref 7950 at that, especially if you're someone playing @ 1080p.

It's £300+ more and you only get the same amount of VRAM, whether 3GB or more is required or not, I just cannot get my head round that. That's very poor value to my mind.

You can get two 7950's for one 780, and have enough for a 2-3TB HDD!

I see you're selling your 670's Moog. Hows the 780 treating you? From your posting style of late i thought you were going to pass on the 780 and stick with your SLI setup.

So OcUK's prices on some cards are within 5% of that.

While it is not far off trust me its more than it should be. Also 516 x 1.05 = 541

One more point worth mentioning is ridiculous price increase on non reference cards in the UK

$649 may not include US sales tax, but yankees who buy from NewEgg only get charged sales tax for shipments to California, New Jersey and Tennessee anyway. The vast majority of states don't get taxed this.

Also, while you may be right in your currency conversion, but as Locky said the real problem lies with NVIDIA's own exhorbitant pricing in the US. USD649 is simply too much. The 680 launched for only USD499 and was a significantly larger jump over the 580 than the 780 is over the 680 (or the 7970, for that matter...)

But so what? The true value of anything is really only determined by the number of people who are prepared to pay the price. Some people are clearly buying these cards. Will be interesting to see whether the sales ultimately meed NVIDIA's expectations

I agree completely that the 7970 was over priced when released, and have said the very same many times.
But you have just cynically dug up one of the most extreme examples.

The 7970 on release was readily available for significantly less than £500

£1000 for a single core GPU that's only 30% faster than the £350 competition "oh... but its the fastest one out there so its worth it"

2 months later they release another one, stick the same cooler as the Titan on it, clock it higher to bring it with in a few % of that £1000 (now £800 - £900) GPU and charge a ridicules £550+ for it "Oh... but its like the £900 Titan, almost as fast with the same cooler, so its worth it"

When I looked every single one was £999, where did you get yours? they have come down now.....

BTW, there is a 7970 in your historic 7970 price list for £419.
And £800+ or £550+ is insane no mater what way you cut it.

They like me have been buying high end hardware for years and are quite aware that there is always something quicker down the road..but this soon? and basically the same part minus some memory at a much lower price is unacceptable!

I'm sure the usual suspects will come out and try justify Nvidias actions as usual. Some of these people seem to suffer from some kind of stockholm syndrome as no matter how much nvidia rips them off they still defend them

The GTX 780 is not faster than the Titan, it is better value though.

Having said that who bought a Titan who was worried about value for money ?
