Nvidia pricing is a joke?

The 7970 was the fastest single core GPU on launch, it cost £420

The GTX Titan was and remains the fastest single core GPU on launch it cast £999 (£579 more than the 7970)
The GTX 780, not even the fastest GPU and costs £550, £130 more than the 7970 cost when it was the fastest GPU, whats more the GTX 780 costs £250 more than the 7970 does today while only being 20 - 25% faster.

Nvidia's prices are absolutely ridicules, their prices are insulting. Nvidia are rip-off merchants and if I was an Nvidia customer I would be absolutely livid.

You're using £ instead of $.
Titan was $999
780 was $650
7970 was $550
680 was $500.

You can't compare launch prices with 16 month old prices and call that bad value for money, when comparing launch vs launch the PPD is the same/slightly better in favour of the 780.

Another way to compare the 780 with the Titan is like a backwards 8800GTX vs 8800 GTX Ultra, only the Ultra came first :D

Prices are as they are due to the fact that we essentially have a duopoly- Nvidia and AMD.

Economics 101: Highest prices=monopoly, Mid prices=duopoly, Lowest prices=perfect competition.

that's actually precisely why the 780 pricing is so starkly bizarre. it's laughable next to the price/performance that competing amd cards represent.

titan though has pretty good compute performance - that was ripped out of the gtx 780

This is quite alarming, because they won't have actually "ripped out" the compute performance from the 780.

The alarming part is what they might have done to achieve that, as it's still the GK110 core, and they won't have actually physically disabled anything in the core that relates to DPFP performance, so it could be entirely a software based gimping of the compute performance, as the only thing that's physically disabled is 3x of the SMX units, there's still 12 left, so in theory should still have 80%~ the double precision floating point performance of a Titan.

Unfortunatly people pay it... gone are the days I fear when I could pickup 2 of the next step card down from the high end without paying more than ~£200 tops (usually more like £160-180) per card.

I paid £380 for the 7950GX2 on release - these days a comparable (tier) card is £800 :|

On the plus side I got an incredible run out of the 470s and not really doing anything that needs the performance over my GTX675m for the immediate future.

We don't live in the U.S.A, you can't use irrelevant equations to justify an argument.

And if your really trying to tell me 120% inflation is justified in 16 Months then I will call the men in white coats.

Utter surreal lunacy.

Even though I have bought a GTX 780 I do think Nvidia are taking the **** with their prices. Titans price IMO was a total joke and the extra money they are asking for the GTX 780 is just plain cheeky. The prices of the dual gpu cards are also the highest they have ever been and I remember paying £335 for my 4870X2 a short time after release, compare that to the GTX 690 and 7990 and you can see prices are on the up. :(

Found a key to pricing parts but not sure on its authenticity. Was this the one Tone?

That chart looks about right, and the GTX580's price break down will be very close to the Titan's too, except the RAM.

But with it being an old chart, the price of RAM per GB will have dropped, where as the other costs will have remained fairly static.

God it annoys the hell out of me when some people are trying to defend this ridiculous pricing with the argument "if you can't afford it don't buy it".

We are the consumers, its our damn right to complain if something is unjustifiably expensive.

Lets give a simple example, if the price of milk doubles overnight without any good reason people would still be able to afford it. Does that mean that we should't do anything about it?

However, you can't just blame Nvidia or Amd for their pricing, at the end of the day they are here to make money.

If you want prices to be normal again, people should simply stop buying their overpriced products whether they can afford it or not. No point in whining.

When people are willing to pay £1000 for a gpu they unwillingly inflate the prices.

After all wasn't Nvidia surprised that the Titan by far outsold the 690. What kind of message does that send to a profit seeking company?

We are the consumers, what we are willing to pay defines prices. If there is someone to blame it is only us.

Do I think people are still willing to pay ridiculous money for this new generation of cards? Undoubtedly!

My trusty 480 (which cost a mere £190) bought shortly after the 580 launch will do the job until a worthy upgrade with a sensible price comes along :)

Or will they just not sell at this price and have to drop a few dollars before the majority start buying?

The majority won't buy a 780, period. The majority don't buy high-end. There are probably more people with 650Ti/660 cards than 670,680, Titan, etc, put together.

It's a very expensive toy for those for whom money is not really an issue.

Let's face it, even on an enthusiast forum, a lot more people will buy a PS4 than sink the equivalent money into a gfx card.

I really cannot be arrsed to argue my case, or get into an argument where spoffle usually ends up getting banned for a few weeks either, I'll let you lot get on with it lol.

Happy days. :)

Prices are based on USD.
Based on how much performance you get per $ you get better value @launch with a GTX780, whether those prices come down to current 680/7970 prices you'll have to wait and see...considering they always eventually come down which increases your PPD i don't see the problem here.

Yeah that's the ones i remember seeing. Looks good, and about what you would expect. No idea if it's real though.
