Nvidia pricing is a joke?

I love these discussion threads.

The next thread like this will be titled "We're Fully Star Swear Words*****! AMD are doing the same pricing strategy!!!"

:p

Didn't think this would ever happen...

Diagro speaks truth, that's basically what i meant. There's still a bad smell around AMD's name, be that from past mistakes or just general filth that gets splurted out from the misinformed. They've made leaps this gen in cleaning their name, fantastic driver support, acknowledgement of CF issues (even though it doesn't effect everyone) competitive pricing (not at the start, bad AMD! :D) and spot on game bundles.

Couple more years of this and we might even 50/50 market share. (discrete GPUs)

Thanks you see thats why I had to ask because from reading the orange highlight thing, I really thought you were just saying amd are a bad taste to be avoided like.,(which i've seen similar comments before, because some people on here were/are unable to differentiate between amd gpu silicon vs the board partners who make the cards.
(For example a batch of faulty msi 7950's overheating, some people affected blamed amd and had the attitude of amd never again, i'm back with nvidia I dont get any issues.
When the real picture was Msi was responsible).

but I see that you are correcting the false belief by misinformed people (not just on this forum) but other forums/ reviews that Amd aren't worthy, due to many issues etc. I agree whilst Amd are not perfect they have made a good effort in all areas with gcn, and the frametime issues, + working on cf latency issues.

I've said it before on here but no-ones taken much notice,
But it's like this

Imagine if 32nm wasn't cancelled for the gtx5/ ati 69** series
If 6950/6970 wasn't cut down so much due to having to use the 40nm process, if
the performance was greater with a full fat 6950/6970/ then would we have seen a stronger performing gcn, (Or would it have been a performance increase similar to vliw5/vliw4)

I'm an nvidia fanboy at heart but the pricing stinks. The 780 shouldn't cost more than the launch 680 IMO. And even down to the 660 to they should be 199 not higher and they shouldn't have been.

780 pricing is high as it is because it's faster than a 7970....until AMD comes out with something faster it will remain just as pricey.

Looking on the brightside,Nvidia have made my mind up not to upgrade setting that price, ill stick with my OC 680"s in SLI to run triple screen for now. They do the job. Looking forward to AMD"s release to see what happens with the money sitting in the bank.
If im going to spend a grand on a couple of cards Im gona want more of an upgrade than 20%, Meanwhile Iv got a lot more disposable income to spend on other things, nvidia have just shot themselves, and it looks like I cant justify GPU upgrades every year at that level.
An easy decision , and nvidia are a customer down this year, Wonder how many others conclude the same.

Toyotas Prius = 112mph
Bugatti Veyron = 250mph

Lets say for ease of calculation thats 150% faster, yet it costs about 60 times more. Like nVidia, Volkswagen are monsters! How dare they.

so your comparing a GT630 to a titan.... yeah that works....

A couple of points which no one can deny...

  • £550 is a lot to spend on a GPU
  • £800 is even more to spend on a GPU
  • Neither the 780 or Titan is a compulsory/needed purchase to play games
  • Much cheaper alternatives from AMD
  • People who do purchase the 780 or Titan know what they are spending and know they can spend less on an alternative product

I am sure others can add to that list but those are facts and regardless if people like or don't like the pricing, it is purely down to the individual who is parting with his/her money and they have no reason to justify their spending. For those that just bought a Titan, I do sympathise if they are feeling Nvidia have stabbed them in the back and fully understand why they would be moaning. Almost the same performance on a GPU for £250 less is a big gap for such a small gain however, the Titan was aimed at big resolutions and for me, that 6GB of VRAM is needed. I have no idea if the next gen consoles will command more VRAM when the game hits PC and wouldn't even like to guess but for now, I am seeing VRAM passing 3GB with full details and the 780 just wouldn't have enough to cope.

Titan is a professional product that ended up in retail , hence the cost - its designed for compute , and can also game well.

GTX 780 is a cut down version , so at its heart is a large compute professional product that's been stripped down.

and ofc like everything if you want the bleeding edge you pay bleeding edge money...

but , the issue with people is the comparison to AMD`s high end , a 7970 GE at time is faster than a 780 (depensing on the game) , but on average is 20% slower , for 85% LESS money

I have the money for a 780, I just refuse to be ripped off ;)

This^

For me it's not a question of "price" (can easily afford a Titan or a 780) it's the "value." I just don't see value in a 780 at it's current price.

Hopefully Maxwell will be far better value, even though it's price may be similar. I holding out with what I've got until Maxwell arrives.

But why is that an issue? Surely a prospective buyer will look into it before parting with his/her money and know what they are buying? It would be an issue if there was no other choice and they had to pay that but alternatives are there, so to say there is an issue, is absurd.

its one of comparative value - as others have said above , they have the money but its an `intake of breath` at the headline price.

It makes me laugh more the one selling the 680 and 670 on bay where it has been used for almost 1 year and they are trying to sell it for the full price. That's the joke.

Haha so true. One person is trying to sell a 6 month old MSI 670 OC for £270. just so happens I am after one of those and you can get it on Overclockers for just £18 quid more brand new. Another bloke is selling one for £215 and is a year old. I am just tempted to buy it brand new as I have £20 quid off anyway and I get Assassins Creed for free :)

Decisions, decisions.
