MK1 MX5 Turbo

AD08's are superb in the dry but they're useless in the wet and cold weather. I wouldn't use them again on an everyday car.

I've had the tired standard Greddy filter changed for a basic K&N cone and am currently looking at cold air feed and heat shield options. The filter location isn't great by any means. Ducting from above the bonnet and down is likely to be a complete pain, so some pipework from the front end is probably going to be the chosen option.

Is that because you had too much power going to the back or some other reason? I have heard they are OK in the wet from most people

Edit: This worries me

Important Care And Usage Instructions:

The ADVAN Neova AD08 was developed using high performance compounds which become brittle at low temperatures and therefore should not be used in certain conditions. ADVAN Neova AD08 tyres thus must be stored or used only at temperature at or above -10°C (14°F) to maintain performance characteristics and to avoid any damage to the tyre or injury to persons or property.

Spent some (a lot) of time yesterday giving the paint a much needed clean. It's come out surprisingly well given I only used a mild clay bar and did one run on the rotary with AG SRP. Topped with Collinite 915. The biggest pain was removing some of the tar with even Tardis seemingly struggling.

The cars also had some issues recently with hesitation, but that was down to the miss wiring of the o2 wide band which is now sorted. I still don't fully understand the fix as it's not fully unconnected, but whatever they've done it's made all the difference. I've been advised it's running slightly too rich but nothing to cause problems.

I'm possibly planning to go for a full satin black wheel refurb with a wide arch kit soon so as to lessen the arch gap slightly without lowering the car further. This should also hide some of the poke from the wheels.

Car looks excellent fella, I really want a Mk1 MX5 but can't justify running 2 cars.. at least not whilst I am still living at home ;)

Good luck with it and keep the thread up to date with further work you do on it :)

Never had any issues with them on my car.

You may never have any issues but the wet weather performance is poor which is backed up by tests. The biggest thing for me though (I've experienced it) is the chance of aquaplaning when hitting standing water being too high for my liking, something purely down to the tread pattern. For that reason alone I wouldn't run them on an everyday car again. Amazing in the dry though and the sidewalls seem spot on to.

"I'd take a set of T1-R's over AD08's". Said no one, ever.

I'll happily say it in the context of everyday weather here i.e. to be used in the cold and wet. For standing water they're bordering on just about dangerous and in the cold wet weather I think you'd be surprised at how a cheaper tyre would outperform them. The compound and tread pattern makes this fairly obvious. Just to add, I'm not preaching about T1-R's being amazing as they're not.

I won't bother commenting any further but have experienced the aquaplaning in my old dc2 on AD08's and it's not good.

So you never actually had a bad experience with them but are going off internet hyperbole? They are labelled grade A or B for wet. I've driven them through a lot of standing water at decent speed and nothing ever happened either.

Oh not again

You've got a cracking car there with some serious BOOST, stop cheaping out with rubbish tyres. I'm not advocating slicks as a bit of slide is fun IME. Full set of Bridgestone RE002 was £266 in 195/50/15. Much better.

as an mk5 owner and as a person thats been there and done it. DO NOT SKIMP ON TYRES.

I ran T1R's for ages, great I thought. Swapped a set of my wheels to RSR's and I will never go back. ALTHOUGH.. they are a dry trackday tire. Push with no heat in them and this happens :D

Great on track and in the dry(atho i do use them all the time now) but day to day ull want a wet/dry tire.

i'm going for the bridgestone RE002 for my wet trackday/day2day tyre

I'm just not convinced at all about the aquaplaning being an issue. No different to any other tyre I've driven on, and the worst that happens is a little tug on the steering then you just carry on, no need to cry about it.

Oh and everything I've heard about RSR is that they are also very good in the wet. Being able to go sideways isn't really a fair judge of a tyre, you can do that on any tyre in any condition.

Slowly starting researching on MX-5's for future car learning/fun project (years away, not months). Threads like this don't help my self restraint!

Awesome car by the way, very envious. Daft wheels though!

As a person with experience of the tyres, the AD08 is better in every condition bar -10 Snow and Ice. T1-R's aren't even on that test, nor any test for the last 13 years that I could ever find. As I said people who fit AD08's wouldn't even look at T1-Rs, there's many better tyres on offer for not much more.
